Greets everybody! :)
When I was a lil kid, I used to believe that everybody's Hungarian, or at least, everybody on Earth speaks Hungarian as his/her mother tongue.
To understand this thing, first I should state that I am Hungarian. I thought that there were people from every in the world, but all of them spoke Hungarian among each other, but among the different nationalities and countries it had different official names, like English, German, etc .... Or actually, we call them that way .... But whose language it is, they call it Hungarian, so everybody has his/her own hungarian :)
How silly I was! :P
Goodbye!

I used to believe that because kids in school learned English, then kids in English-speaking countries would be learning my native language.

One day whilst coming from a day Johannesburg, we were stuck in a big traffic-jam so in rage my dad shouted For f*** sake! and from then on I would say F*** Sake! If I couldnt do something. As much as this was amusing to my parents my Grandmother was coming the next week so they had to try convince me that my dad had actually said Milk Shake.

When my mum used to pick me up from school I was sometimes announce that I was thirsty, my mum would reply she was friday. I'm from glasgow, scotland - saying thirsty in a loose accent sounds like 'thurstay' ergo 'thursday' so this was my mum's way of gently chastising me for poor enunciation, by replying in an equally nonsensical way.
I didn't realise this til I was 15 - I had assumed Friday was just a way of saying you were hungry....

I thought all poems in all languages were written so that they would rhyme when they were translated into English.
I used to believe the word fudge was the f-word. I couldn't understand why there were all those Beverly Cleary children's books with the word "fudge" in them! I thought that was terrible!

When I was young, I went to go see the movie 'Titanic' with my mother. Good idea for a family movie, right? I specifically remember the scene when Jack is showing Rose his sketch book, and the drawings of the one-legged prostitute. I thought 'prostitute' was a fancy word for politician. I thought that she probably wasnt a very good one if she kept on being naked all the time. The sad thing is, I kept on thinking prostitute=politician until I was a teenager. Of course, now that I'm older I know its the other way around.

I used to think that people who spoke foreign languages only spoke them, but their thoughts were in english like mine.
I used to believe…
Not my belief, but my brother's. When he was around 12 and I 14, the subject of foreign accents came up in a discussion. At one point, I mentioned American accents. (We're American.) He looked confused, and said... "What? Americans don't HAVE an accent."
He had been assuming that people from England, Australia, etc. had to go out of their way to talk like that, and that the American accent was just the normal default way of talking.

When I first heard the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" from Alice in Wonderland on tv, I thought the walrus said it was time to talk about "shoes and ships and CEILING wax." I had no idea why anyone would want to wax their ceiling, but I figured it had to be either more Lewis Carroll nonsense or else some kind of obscure ceiling maintenance technique that grownups used.

When I was 7 i was in the car with my dad, mum, nan and grandad. I turned to my grandad and said "grandad, are you a bastard?"
(I'd overheard some teenage lads yelling at some old guy calling him a bastard earlier that day so I'd become increasingly curious as the day progressed)
you should have seen his face! haha
childhood naivety is so funny lol
my parents still tease me about it to this day
I used to believe…
"an" is short for "and"
I used to believe…
You know the movie 5th Element with Bruce Willis and Chris Rock? Theres a character thats all blue with tentacles and sings like its at an opera. When I first saw the movie, during the solo, I yelled out really loud, "Eew look at those testicles!!"
I still get teased for it.
I used to believe…
when i was in about 5th grade or so i started hearing all new words...bastard, whore, hoe, slut etc. i had no idea what these words meant, but i was very sure that bastard meant 'funny'. so one day at my friends house we were eatting dinner with her family and somebody said something rather funny, so i said 'oh, you're such a bastard!' wow, i'll never forget that!
I used to believe…
When i was a little kid i used to believe that the word yellow was said as yeller and brat was a cuss word cause my parents told me it was! i am still also afraid of CLOWNS!
I used to believe…
My gramma once told me that if i curse the world "damn", a cruel beast with a skull face would come to take me to the "child-who-curse" land, and I could never see my parents again.
Thank God, I grew up and now I can curse like hell!! Hee-Haa!!
I used to believe…
Once I was watching Blockbusters and a clue came on, "What T is the name for the limbs of an Octopus", I didn't hesitate in shouting out 'Testicles', my mother found it extremely funny but I was not the wiser, I was only 9 at the time!
I used to believe that foreign languages used the same words as me only they used them differently (e.g. instead of calling a rabbit a rabbit they would call it a fork or something)

I used to believe that Alice in Wonderland's older sister was named "Read," because Alice had to sit and listen to her sister, Read.

As a small child I was fascinated by all kinds of signs and notices, including fire safety notices in hotel rooms and public buildings. It said what to do if you discovered a fire, and I used to confuse the two types of fire (i.e. as in a heater versus as in an arson attack). I remember once seeing a notice saying in case of fire, and there was a heater nearby so I said Heres a fire.
