I used to believe…
When I was a kid, a newspaper published the Russian Alphabet. I thought I was very clever in substituting the letters of English words with the Russian equivalent.... to this day, I blush when I am reminded of it, as I told everyone I could now speak/write Russian!
I used to believe that if I said words like hell, devil or words related to that. I would be calling the devil and go straight to hell. I remember I would somtimes crawl under a blanket and whisper all those words because then the devil wouldn't hear me.
I always wondered where all the words and their meanings originated from, and I decided that at the beginning of time, there was a big table of old wise men with long white beards, and they all discussed certain sounds and decided to give them meanings, for example, "PEN-CIL" would mean that pointy skinny stick that you write with.
I used to believe that "Hazchem" was a German word meaning "danger" (hence the signs up at factories etc).
I was 21 before I figured out, all by myself at least, that it was an abbreviation for "hazardous chemicals".
I used to think that saying "I can't speak Spanish" meant that you literally couldn't make the words come out of your mouth (something like how Jim Carrey couldn't lie in the movie Liar Liar.) I pictured people like grabbing their throats and trying to choke the words out.
I used to believe speaking other languages than english we just because people were to stupid to speak english.

I used to think our local chase sign read "shit" and our bank of america sign read "Bank Of Asshole", mainly because my parents said those words all the time
I don't know why, but when I was first learning to count it went like this : 1... 2... 3 ...4... 5 ...6 ...7... 8... 9... 10 ...11 ....12 ....30... 31... 32 ...33 .....
I can't remember why I thought you went from 12 to 30 but I counted like that for almost a year till my dad told me the correct way....

Until I was in 5th grade, I thought that calling someone a "wannabe", was like calling someone a lesbian. This was why girls were always calling other girls "wannabe's" when they were name calling. I specifically remember saying "That girl is such a wannabe", thinking that I was saying that she wanted to kiss other girls.

Once when I was about 5 (I guess), me, my sister, and her friend Jennifer were playing a game where Jennifer sat on one side of the door and my sister and I would sit on the other side. We would write little notes to each other and slip them under the door. Well, I had come up with something to write to Jennifer..."Jennifer hell bell", I thought it was really cool becuase it rhymed. So I asked my sister how to spell 'hell' and she said 'H-E--Madeline! That's a bad word! I'm going to tell mom!' And I shouted 'No! I didn't know it was!' i was so scared.
I never could figure out why two people would talk to eat chover. Whatever "chover" was!?!?!?!
Turns out I mis heard "talk to each other."
But I still want some chover. it sounds like it might taste good ;-)

I took Spanish in elementary and I got the idea in my head that Spanish people laughed in Spanish.

When i was 10 i believed door mats that said welcome, meant i will eat you in latin , So iwould run away in fright the end.

In our house we used to have a medical dictionary called the Funk & Wagnell. If me or my brother had something wrong with us Mum or Dad would tell us to "look it up in the Funk & Wagnell" but of course to our ears we heard "look it up you f**ken wagnell". We always wondered what a wagnell was and why our parents were swearing at us.

When I was young, I believed that all letters and numbers had genders. U was male, 2 was female, and J was female.
I used to believe that people who spoke other languages thought in English, hence in Germany a guy would say to another guy "Guten tag" and the other guy would think "Okay, um, Guten Tag means Good day."

When I was 3 or 4 my mom lost an earing in our driveway. She told me and my sister (6 at the time) to go look for it.

Filipino people here often mix English with their Tagalog. So I came to the conclusion that Filipino people only created half a language and got lazy, so they took English to fill the rest.
I used to believe that English and Farsi (my native language) were the only languges that exsisted and people that spoke a different language were stupid and they were just speaking jibberish
