When I was in third grade, we had these planners that we wrote down our homework in every day. There was sections for math, science, social studies. And there was one labled English/Reading. I knew what it ment, but this idiot that sat next to me named John did not. My friend Elizabeth asked me what section to write down some homework we had in, and I told her English/Reading. Then John said something like, "You wouldn't put it there! We don't live in England! We don't speak English we speak American!" He denies it to this day and I still burst out laughing whenever I think about it.

When my sister and i were younger, we both tried to impress each other and our parents by speaking chinese. Of course, neither of us knew how to speak chinese, so we both started to make strange "ching, chong, chang" sounds in an attempt to sound authentic.

As a child, I thought everyone else in the world was so special, because they spoke more than one language, and that english was just a made-up language having only bits and parts of other languages in it...

English, the chili of all languages.

My parents always read the bible in english (the Authorised Version). I knew that jewish people spoke another language when they read their bible, but I used to wonder why they didn't talk like Moses, King David, or Jesus when they read.

I tried asking my dad and mum about it, but I misunderstood, and for all the years that I couldn't read, I thought my parents were reading in hebrew and greek with their eyes, but saying it in english!

I used to think everyon ein the world spoke english in their head, i couldn't imagine anyone thinking in another language
I thought people who spoke another language (french, german etc) had to translate everything they wanted to say in their heads from english
I never understood why everyone couldn't speak english

Never could understand, as a kid, why learning foreign languages was such a big deal. All you had to do was to work out how other people arranged their alphabets.

For instance ABC in English might be UMJ in Italian. So an English 'cab' was an Italian 'jum'. Simple!

i used to think that to speak spanish all you had to do was say the word with an 'm' in front of it. so to say "pizza" you would just say "mizza". if the word started with an 'm', you said it with a 'b'. where i came up with this i have no idea...

not a spanish speaker

There is a Jordanian who owns a local restaurant/grocery close to where I live. I speak Arabic, so I like to speak it with him. He is Muslim, so I usually throw out an "As Salaam Alaikum" when I enter his store. 2 days ago, I was in a rush, so I yelled out the Arabic equivalent of "How are you?" to him instead, on my way to the back of his store. An older American couple, were in the store.

When I got up to the counter with my items, my friend said "That couple just apologized for your rudeness, & assured me that all Americans were not as intolerant as you." I laughed so hard that I cried.
The phonetic Arabic for "How are you" is "Eh, fuhkoo."

when i was in school i learned about the 5 romance languages, and of course i didn't pick up on why they were really called romance languages, i thought (for quite some time) that they were called that because all of those languages sounded really romantic when spoken, and of course it made sense because everybody always said that when someone spoke French, it sounded really sexy!

When I was little, I used to believe that all the people on Earth really knew English, but invented all the different languages because everybody speaking English all the time would be boring.

When I was in second grade the teacher asked everybody if they knew a foreign language. Having learned both French and Japanese as foreign languages but not knowing there was any difference between them, I spoke up and said I knew French and proceeded to count in Japanese. The teacher, who actually knew French said it was a lie, disregarded me and it hurts me to this day.

When I was like 5 and "got" a Mexican cousin, I thought that his tongue would actually be only able to pronounce in Spanish, but that he was in fact thinking in French (which I speak), because the one real language was French.
