My son had three imaginary friends at age three. One day at lunch, she held out his arm and wiggled his head. He said " look mama, a little elephant, then he did it again, and said " well, lookit there, it's a little mouse, and again, "I be darn, anoder little mouse, but he's grey.
The mice were with us for a few years, and went everywhere with us. Peter was the grey mouse, and he would fly outside the car we we drove, he'd even role down the window to let him in. Once he let his grandpa keep Peter in his pocket, while my son kept the brown mouse in his. Then when they had sit down to order, my son said, Where's Peter Pop? His grandfather answered, He's still in my pocket. Then my son, in his usually load voice said: "Well Papa, Why don't you take your Peter out of your pocket and put it on the table" His papa couldn't stop laughing, neither could the waitress.

When I was a kid, if I was being mischevious or bad in some way, my mom would (rather theatrically) pick up the phone and pretend to call "The Woman". Now, "The Woman" was a bogeyman figure who worked for child services. By all accounts, she had curly teeth, greasy hair, and if called upon would take you away to live with her in a grotty house with itchy blankets and nothing to eat but moldy bread. I used to believe she was real. I remember being so traumatised i'd have nightmares about her, standing 100 feet tall somewhere in the distance, tearing roofs from houses searching for me. Frankly, I think its a wonder I'm not petrified of all women these days...

And I believed till I was 9 years old.

I used to believe that my blanket was a special kind of body shield that blocks ghosts and monsters from harming you.

When I was 4 years old, there was a spate of monster stories at nursery. One night (or so I thought), I was picked up out of my bed by a brown furry monster, taken downstairs and placed on the record player where I lay, while a few ghosts (you know the sheet looking ghosts from Scooby-Doo) danced above me. For years I was absolutely convinced that it had happened! Maybe it did...

When I was 8 I thought there was a monster fish living under the tub that ate everything. Whenever I took a shower at night I thought it would come up from the drain and attack me unless I used a certain soap. The other soaps it would just eat but one of the soaps I thought it hated the smell of so it would keep it away. I called it "Peach Repel." I would cry when we ran out of it because I was sure the monster would eat me if I couldn't keep it away with the Peach Repel. Once I heard strange gurgling noises coming from the drain and I was SURE it was the monster and it was going to come and attack me and then I found out it was just water gurgling in the drain. I stopped being scared of the monster fish when I got into writing stories and in my book series I was writing one of the characters was a girl who invented a potion called Fish X that could turn her into a monster fish. Writing about the monster fish, especially writing about the monster fish actually being just an 8-year-old genius with a potion made me a lot less scared of it.

As a child I was taught that the tooth fairy would buy our teeth so she could add them to her crown.

When I was little I was convinced that tiny people lived in the walls of my house. I lived in an old house with lots of mouse holes and cracks in the walls so I thought the tiny people used those as doors. They even had a name, Laa Laa's, I don't know where that came from. All the time I would lay on the floor by a hole waiting to see if one would come out or I would try to talk to them. I used to draw pictures of them and their cities and write stories about them. Eventually I came to terms with the fact they didn't exist but they kept me company in my younger years.

When I was younger (and less sane) I created Answerphonia. She lived in the phone, and when ever the answerphone came on I would pretend that she was talking to me or my parents. I got very upset when my parents gently explained that Answerphonia didn't exist, and that it was normal people that were talking. I refused to believe them, and when the answerphone stopped working I fished it out the bin and dug a grave for it.
I was a weird kid.

I used to have an imaginary friend called Miranda, who was a mermaid. Every day, she wriggled out of the pond in the garden and hopped up to my room at 3:00 in the morning, yelling in my ear for me to get up (this was actually my alarm clock that no-one knowed how to fix)
Miranda died when the pond froze over in the winter, and she drowned.

I used to believe that the Easter Bunny was a bunch of men from the Elks club that went all around the twons dressed in bunny suits and driving old Trucks.

There was a time in my life when I was around 10 ys old, when I was really obsessed with vampires. I watched a children's series about them and read several books dealing with vampires. After a while I became really paranoid and suspected everyone in my surroundings including my mum to actually be real vampires disguising as humans, ! I tried to act inconspicous in order for them not to think I had uncovered their camouflage so they would not do any harm to me.

When I was 8 ys old, there was a tv-series about a magic ring and if you turned it around your finger, you could conjure up all kinds of things including, jewels, gold, money etc. My mom was a single parent and did not have much money. She complained about that a lot. I always told her that as soon as I would have found that magic ring, our situation would change dramatically. I had total faith in that.

When I was little and it was time for bed, my parents would say the poem of "Wee Willie Winkie," but this just made me scared to death that there was a little man outside my window every night just waiting for me to go to bed and my bedroom being on the second floor meant he could fly. For years I thought he was outside my window watching me while I slept, and I would curl up in a ball and sleep as close to the wall as possible so he wouldn't know I was in there and he'd go away. To this day I have issues walking past open windows at night.

I used to believe that if I slept with my arms or legs dangling over my bed, a monster would come in and chop them off. I also believed if I slept with my neck exposed a vampire would come in an suck up my blood. Needless to say, I slept bundled up in fear of monsters and vampires.

I use to belive if you lose your teeth and put it under the pillow, one fairy puts candies for you.

I used to believe that their was a gorilla that lived outside my window. I couldn't sleep facing the window because he would bite my face off, and I couldn't turn my back towards the window because it would make the gorilla angry. I slept on my back for about 3 years before I finally came up with the theory that the gorilla now sat outside my brother's room. ;)
