I used to believe…

When I was little I used to believe that when the nights begins, the monster in my closet revives.
Mum convinced me this was not true.

I snook out onto the staircase on Christmas eve once and there was someone in the dining room where we put our Christmas tree. All the lights were off so I couldn't see who it was but I just sat there for a bit and then when I thought they heard me I ran back to my room. Obviously it would have been one of my parents but I remember thinking I'd see Santa.

I used to believe that everyone would definitely get abducted by aliens at least once in their life. Like it was a fact of life that just happened to everyone.

my dad always told me stories about the Jabberwocky. according to my dad, he had log whiskers and smelled like catfish, was homeless and forever mournful. the stories were meant to be spooky but in my mind, the Jabberwocky became my guardian angel of sorts. Almost to the point of being an imaginary friend...lol

My big brother and I thought this pretty spot under a tree in our yard where there was moss and dew in the morning was where fairies lived. We would go there and just sit and look at it.

I used to believe…

I was never scared of monsters under my bed or anything like that I thought that was stupid. I was terrified that I would hallucinate and see them though, since that was actually possible.

Every year, I wrote 'magic carpet' on my Christmas wish list. Only that. My mom would tell me she didn't think Santa could do that because he would run out of magic. I would reply, "Mommy, magic doesn't work that way." One year, I got the carpet. It was beautiful deep blue and green with tassels. I couldn't make it fly, but I adored it anyways.

For longer than I'd like to admit, I believed vampires were real and lived in a secret society. I believed they chose who was allowed to be a vampire, and I so badly wanted to be "chosen". Whenever I was in a car, I would sit with my neck exposed near the window with my head tilted away, just in case a vampire was watching. I would sleep like this too, because I believed that the vampire would have followed me home and waited until I was asleep to sneak in my room and turn me into a vampire. I really, really wanted this to happen.

I had about 100 imaginary dog friends. I even had a list of all their names and breeds. When I went grocery shopping with my parents, I would buy them imaginary food and gear. When I had to ride in the car/on a bus for any distance, I would believe they were running along side the road, dealing with whatever obstacles happened to be there.

I believed that my real family were aliens, and they would come in the middle of the night to take me back home. However, they would only take me back if I was awake and waiting for them.

I used to believe…

On the night of Christmas Eve my dad used to point to airplanes and say "Look! Its Rudolph and Santa!" I was the confused child that saw Rudolph almost every night flying around in the sky.

I used to believe…

In fourth grade, there was a kid in our class who insisted he was Martian. This went on all year. One day, playing this game of forcing people into the "Kootie Box" (a painted rectangle on an outside schoolwall), we all pushed the kid into the Kootie Box and he bumped his head. He promptly grew an egg sized and shaped lump in the middle of his forehead (he was not otherwise injured). For years afterward, my friends and I were convinced he was telling the truth.

My parents told me that ever New Years Eve at exactly midnight, old Father Time would leave from his home within the walls and then Baby Time would move in to take his place. As Old Father Time left, he would always refill our Christmas stockings with small toys and candy!

I had an imaginary friend when I was little. Her name was Copelia and she could turn into a doll. She wore a knee-length pink dress, and she had long, blonde hair(it was strictly dip-dyed pink). We would always dance and swim and I took her with me everywhere. I still love her, though in a different way. She helped me to make REAL friends, whom I ALSO love to this day. Sometimes when I'm nervous, I can almost hear her whispering in my ear to just be brave and be myself. Without Copelia, I wouldn't be where I am today. Thank you, friend.

I actually only recently stopped believing in Santa; my parents never told me that he wasn't real, and my friends always used to pretend for my sake. Then one day my friend Petra let it slip. I've never felt so unhappy. (By the way, I'm 27)
