I used to believe…

When I was little, I watched Ninja Turtles all the time, and whenever I would pass by a sewer I would have to stick my fingers in the holes, and I swear that once one of the turtles touched me. Scares me now to think of what I really felt. Ugggh.

I used to believe Jamie and the Magic Torch was real. I genuinely thought that if I shone a torch on the floor, it would open up a portal to a helter skelter which would take me to the bottom of a tree trunk, onto a trampoline into a dimension called Cuckoo Land. However, despite routinely embarking on this nightly course of under-the-bed torch action, I didn't actually make it to Cuckoo Land. Yet, I believed this was because I did not have a dog called Wordsworth, not even considering such a place did not exist. Perish the thought!

Wordsworth! Wordsworth!
Following hard behind.
Ready for adventure, always there to lend a paw
...or hand!

When I was little and saw "This film has been modified from its original version and formatted to fit your screen" at the beginning of TV movies, I thought that the movie makers had figured out how to shrink the movie picture so it would fit on our little TV.

You know on the strepsils ad when you see the strepsil between someone's fingers turn to a little first-aid kit? Well, when I was younger I made my mum buy them just so I could see the strepsil turn to a little first-aid kit!!

I used to believe that in a drama serial shown on TV, the actors and actresses are acting in real time and that having advertisments in between the show give them time for a break before they continue acting in front of us.

I used to believe that cartoon characters hung out with other cartoon characters when not working, that Bugs Bunny would sometimes have Mickey Mouse and Tom and Jerry over for dinner. I never saw any cartoon characters roaming around because they all lived in California.

I used to believe…

Last December (I was 12, people) I watched the movie A Wrinkle in Time in school. After watching that I was convinced that the 5th dimension the kids went to in A Wrinkle in Time was real, and I was bored and I wanted to find the Tesseract.

That only lasted a few hours, and then I put myself down for believing such a childish thing at 12 years old. And then I told someone (I think it was one of my friends) and she said, "Hey, it's possible." She most likely said that to make me stop feeling so down about believing it.

I always thought that all T.V. was live. If someone was on two different channels at the same time they would have to run to the studio and get changed in time for me to change the T.V. over. I also believed that you could record a show at any time even days before and after it had been on.

The Animaniacs were fictionalizations of the Warner brothers and the "Warner Sister" it took me years to realize this was not the case.

I convinced my sister that you could give someone cancer by pointing a TV remote control at them and holding a button down for about a day and a half. This in itself is comical enough, but she took it to the extreme conclusion that it gives you cancer if it's pointing in your general direction for any length of time, whether or not a button is being held down. To this day she still insists on having remote controls point away from her.

I used to believe that at the end of a movie the credits would roll up and exit the television through the antennas...they would become really small and invisible and float in the air...

Although I realised TV was all pretend, I didn't have any idea of what stunt men were. Watching Starsky & Hutch one day, some guy got pushed off a tall building and was killed, so I concluded that the producers must have a) paid him incredibly well and b) fixed him up with lots of hot girls for a couple of months before shooting to persuade him to give up his life for his art...

When I was little and would watch sitcoms with my family on t.v. I always wondered where the laughter on the show was coming from. I realized that it was obviously the laughter from everyone at home watching the same show from their couches. So, I would crawl up to t.v. speakers and wait anxiously for the laughter after a joke at which point I would laugh really really hard and obnoxiously so that my laughs would be heard over everyone else. I would even have my friends watch the same show some night and wait to see if they can hear my laughs.

When I was little the Carry On films were the most risque television that my siblings and I were allowed to watch at home. At the time, all the innuendo and tight clothing and cleavage seemed very grown-up to me. So much so, in fact, that when I was having a video-party (bet they dont have those anymore) for my 11th birthday and my friends wanted to know what we were watching, I mentioned some of those films. Most of them hadnt heard of them and seemed more interested in what age rating they were, so I confidently told them they were at least a 12, maybe even a 15. My proud bubble was burst when one girl chimed in "No they're not, they're only a PG!" No one seemed very impressed after that, and suffice to say I rented some cool modern films for the party!
