I used to believe…

When I was a really little kid, and whenever I got my older sister mad, she would always point the remote control at me and say "I'm turning you off!" I would run around the room crying for hours because i thought i was turned off and no one could see me like when you turned the t.v. off. A couple days after screaming, someone else would use the remote to turn on the t.v. I wondered if when they turned the t.v. on, if they could see me again. It has been ten years, and I still fear turning off the t.v with the remote.

I once believed that anytime a tape was played, and thus a movie watched, the actors were somehow acting it out live. I finally got straightened out when I asked my dad, "How can they be ready to redo the whole movie anytime someone wants to watch it?" and he explained the concept of VHS tapes to me.

For the longest time, I believed that some people I knew had cameras in every mirror. My closet door has a huge mirror. For the longest time I changed in my sister's room so they couldn't see me naked.

This one is probably extremely common. I used to believe that all TV and radio was live--REALLY live. The shows and music were performed as they were broadcast, and when you changed channel or frequency, they quickly shuffled in a new band or show. When you turned your radio or TV off, they shut down.

There used to be what was called "MIllion Dollar Movie" - it would feature a different movie every week, but the movie would be repeated at various intervals during the day - say 9:30 am, 12:30 pm, 4:30 pm, 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm every single day for a whole week.
I would watch my favorite movies every single time I could, thinking that the NEXT time I watched, the commercial breaks would maybe come at a different point in the film, so I could see what happened next.

I would watch the show for secret crys of help from the kids so I could convince my parents to go help them. My parents were convinced that I actually liked it. They bought me sheet with Barney's face and I flipped. I don't think they ever understood me.

When I was a very little girl - 4, 5, 6? - we had a console-style stereo. It was about 4 feet long, and 3 feet high (with six-inch spindle legs). It had radio, 8-track, and a turntable. I was convinced that a group of small people lived inside somewhere and that was how the music was made!
