I used to believe…

When I was younger I used to believe that the songs that came out on the radio were actually being sung live from the radio stations. It never crossed my mind that the songs were recorded, hahaha...

I used to believe that there was a cartoon world, and that everytime someone drew a picture it would be born in it's animated world. I still hope it's true, because that would be awesome.

I was 6 or 7 when "Roots" came on. Everybody who was ever on TV was in it, and everybody in the country watched it. I guess it didn't occur to my parents that a mini-series about slavery might include some pretty uncomfortable stuff. At any rate, the scene where the slave drivers whip Kunta in order to get him to accept his new name? Well, after it was all over one of the actors said, "We sold off what was left of him." I thought they had whipped him so hard that he came apart, and they sold his body for meat! I was absolutely horrified that my parents weren't nearly as outraged as I was.

When I was around 8, I used to read the TV Guide very carefully in the hopes that SOMETHING good would come on the three channels we had. I would always come across this show called "To Be Announced". It seemed to come on a LOT, so it must have been important. I was convinced that since it came on late at night or really early on Sunday, it was a public affairs program, probably promoting Black pride ("To Be ANNOUNCED!", like "I am SOMEBODY!"). I tried to watch it a few times, but it was always a different show. When it finally dawned on me, I think it was the first "forehead slap" of my life.

When I was little(r), I first saw Edward Scissorhands. I watched it with my mother, and while she was crying her eyes out I comforted her by saying: "It's ok mum, some farmers with pitchforks will kill him for you." I never could understand why she just cried harder. I was terrfied of him and assumed he was real.

I used to believe that there were people in the TV that watched the shows and laughed at the funny parts, and thats why on some shows you can hear other people laughing (which i now know is the studio audience)

when I was little, I used 2 belive that the radio station played music live. I always wondered how they played that backround music when they were talking, or when they were about to let a band play.

I used to think that cars with radios had ants in the boot that sang all the songs and trained for years to change their voices so nobody would know they were there.

I used to believe that Agatha Christie, Angela Lansbury, and Jessica Fletcher were all the same person. I was finally corrected after "Beauty and the Beast" came out, when I said, "Wow, I can't believe that's Agatha Christie doing the voice of the teapot."

When my friend was little, she would watch the news and think that the news people were talking to her! She would say leave me alone! Don't talk to me!and run all over the house. Then she would peek at the t.v and start running.

There used to be a movie I loved as a kid called "The brave little toaster" and my favorite character was the Toaster. I was so into the movie that I thought that my toaster was secretly alive too and I would go as far as unplugging it and taking it to my room to take care of it. My ma got annoyed with it real fast and ended up hiding it from me and only taking it out when she needed it.

My sister and I would watch the Power Puff Girls when we were younger, and in the Theme Song, this Speech Bubble (now I realize it's probably a sound company or something) would come up, and we thought that meant that we could talk to the television charactors while that symbol was up. We would say things like 'Bubbles, you're my favourite!'

We still joke about this from time to time.
