I used to believe…
When I was about four or five I used to think the weather man could see me from inside the tv. i thought he was really talking to us and i guess that's why i thought he could see what we were doing.
I used to believe that when the television was turned off, the program would stop, and resume at the exact point where it left off when the set was turned back on.
I used to be afraid of party political broadcasts on the tv, because they always started with the Party's name on a black background and silence, so I thought the prime minister lived in a horrible dark world and if I watched I might get sucked in or something, so I hid when they started and never saw what they were really about... i was a disturbed child!
I believed that when you heard someone singing on the radio, they were actually IN the radio singing into a microphone. I always wondered how they could change people so fast (like when the songs changed), until I asked my grandmother and she set me straight :)

When a movie covered a large number of years, I believed that a portion was filmed, then several years passed for the actors to grow older before finishing the movie. How else could the people grow old?

I used to believe that there was a tropical island called Paradise where everybody went around in swimming costumes eating Bounty bars all day.

Up until I was about 6 years old, I used to believe that each person had different t.v programmes on their television.
One day my mum past the phone on to me so I could speak to my friend, as she was talking to my friends mother. We (my friend and I) spoke while we were both watching T.V. During our conversation, We started talking about what we where watching. I then told her to press 4 on her remote control and describe what she saw on the screen. I was then amazed at what she desribed, as they were the same images that I could see on T.V!

I believed as a kid that the TV stations showed a TV program on a projector screen and aimed the camera at it to air to the town.

I used to believe that the local radio stations had the real stars in their studios singing their songs all day and they neve left.
I must have been about three at the time - I can remember quite clearly being very worried about Popeye. He was constantly being beaten to a pulp by Bluto and the spinach was always just almost out of his reach. I spent a lot of time fretting that one day he wouldn't be able to reach that spinach and Bluto would finally finish him off!

As a child, I could never understand why people 'broke records' on the radio. I loved listening to records, and thought if they were just breaking them, they could send them to me instead.
I used to believe that whenever you watched TV, the actors would come into your screen, and act it out for you. I somehow pictured millions of clones of the same actor going to different people's TV screens. I also believed that when they died in the show, they died in real life, and gave their money they earned to friends and family.

WHEN I WAS 5 OR 6 AFTER THE FIRST TIME I EVER SAW THE WIZARD OF OZ I THOUGHT THAT IF YOU STOOD IN THE MIDDLE OF A DUST DEVIL YOU WOULD GET SWEPT UP AND TAKEN TO OZ. NOT JUST ANY ONE OF THEM I THOUGHT THEIR WAS THE "MAGIC ONE" AND THAT AFTER DEDICATEDLY STANDING IN THE CENTER OF EACH ONE I WAS BOUND TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE. WHEN MY BROTHER FIGURED OUT WHAT I WAS DOING AND TOLD ME HOW STUPID I WAS FOR IT, I WAS ALMOST AS CRUSHED AS WHEN I FOUND OUT THERE WAS NO SANTA.
I thought the people on TV were somehow "in" the TV, and thus could see me, too. As a result, I always made sure to FULLY close the door to our bathroom that was within viewing range of the TV (so they couldn't watch me pee).

This is my daughter's. She's seven now.
We took her to her first movie in a theater when she was three. She did really well and loved the show. Then at the end, when the lights came up, she ran down to the front of the theater and started looking around on the wall under the screen.
We were about 7 or 8 rows back and called up to her to see what she was doing. She said, "Where's the tape?"
At home it is her job to put the video tape away after we watch a movie so she was up there looking for the slot that the tape would come out of now that the show was over.

In the UK we had a TV advert called 'The green cross code man' who explained the dangers of crossing the road without looking. The punchline of this advert was 'Look out kids, because I won't be there when you cross the road' which I (at the age of 4) heard as 'Look out kids, because I will be there when you cross the road'.
I was quite confused after a week of not seeing this guy until my mom explained what the advert really meant.

Remember how when you shut off those old tube-type TVs, the picture would shrink down vertically to a thin line, then horizontally until there was just a "dot" in the center of the blank screen? (A dot that could persist for quite some time.) Well, when I was very young, I thought that the dot was an "eye" and that the TV could spy on me when it was off. This is probably why I watched so much TV as a kid -- as long as it was on and there was a picture, I felt safe, but especially early in the morning or late at night, if I entered a room with a TV that wasn't on, I got scared.

In the days before cable, when the TV signal would fail, local stations used to put up a placard that read, "Please Stand By, Technical Difficulties." I used to think I had to get up from the couch and go stand by the TV to help the signal come back. I did it for months until I surprised my family with my trick. I was a little insulted they didn't want to help.
