I used to believe…

My friend across the street told me (and I believed for a long time) that Native Americans lived on the nearby hills, and were listening to everyone with powerful tape recorders and other fancy spy gadgets. If a child cursed, the Indians would tell their parents about it.

Needless to say, I was relieved to find out this was false.

When I was little I loved the movie Mary Poppins. I thought if I took my pink umbrella outside and the wind picked up just right I could fly like her. Fortunately I didn't do anything crazy like jump off the roof of the house.

When I was little I used to think that everything you saw on TV was actually inside the TV. Like little people and all those yummy chocolate bars from the Moro adds, and I thought you had one opportunity to smash the TV glass and then you could have whatever was on TV at the time. So I watched the TV for years waiting for the best thing to come on so I could smash the TV but I knew it had to be really really special, so I kept waiting for the most perfect thing... Luckily I never ended up smashing the TV.

When I was younger I believed when you turned on the radio people were singing live to me and only me, when my friend asked me if I had heard Down town I said yes, so did many other people I thought WOW this singer must have sung this song more then 1,000,000 tines a day

Up until about 9 months ago, I believed that the people like Maria and Luis on Sesame Street were real people not characters being played by actors. Amazing what you can learn when you have a child of your own!!

I used to believe…

Whenever I saw a movie based on a true story, I used to believe that there were cameras following the "real" person around and I would wonder how they knew that a good story was going to happen to that particular person. And if someone killed someone I wondered why that person was stupid enough to do it in front of a camera.

I used to have a crush on Alan Alda, on M.a.s.h., and when I went to bed one night,I placed a handwritten sign on my window that said"Alan Alda, come here",so that he could find my house.

After seeing the movie nuclear war movie, "The Day After" when I was about ten years old, it scared me so bad that every single time a news update commercial came on television, I thought it would be announcing that the bombs were on their way from Russia. That movie messed me up bad!

I used to believe there was a minature band living inside my radio and when we switched the radio on, they sang for us. When my mum turned the radio up really high once it broke and i assumed that they had all "lost there voices"

On Dukes of Hazzard, I used to think that Roscoe P. Coltrane's real name was "Roscoe Peekotrain". I also wondered why the hell Bo & Luke didn't look like Bo & Luke anymore and changed their names to Coy & Vance. Not to mention the guy who would sometimes narrate the show...I wondered why you could only hear him and not see him. It was also quite some time before I found out who General Lee was. After all, it wasn't like KITT on Knight Rider; General Lee could not tell anyone its name.

Man, kindergarteners are so oblivious.

I used to the ALF (the alien from Melmac) was real, and that he ate cats because they were evil and he was trying to save the world.

Back in the early-80s when I was in kindergarten, one of my very favourite TV shows was Knight Rider. Back then my parents had a 1974 Chevy Camaro that I absolutely loved (when my father decided to trade it for a butt-ugly pick-up truck I was rather upset). I would go outside and hang around the car, pretending not to pay attention to it but stealing glances every so often to see if I could catch it talking (beats me why I just didn't go up to it and ask, "hey, can you talk?", but acting like a spy was just so much more interesting at that age). I conducted this top-secret experiment a few more times until, with a heavy heart, I realized it was just a "normal" car.

Whenever I watched Tom & Jerry cartoons when I was a kid, I always thought it was amazing how they did all these strange things like squash themselves flat or stretch. One thing I always thought was funny was when a cartoon character was inflated like a balloon, and I used to think that this was possible in real life.

I always wanted to find out, so I would do things like inflate a balloon and then inhale it all to make my belly swell up, and I once tried to use a bicycle tyre pump to fill me with air. I even asked my cousin to take the tube of a snorkel and blow air into it into me to try and blow me up.

I eventually stopped doing this (thankfully) when I not only realised it was impossible, but it wasn't very healthy for me to do this sort of thing. Heh, I wish I hadn't realised it sooner though, to save myself the embarrasment.

I used to believe…

When I was about 3-4 years old, I used to believe that if I could break through the TV screen somehow, I could make it to Sesame Street. I guess I thought the TV was some kind of portal to another place.
