I used to believe…

As a small child, I knew that there was a difference between cartoons and live action television, but I didn't know what it was. I was always troubled by the fact that no matter how fast I ran, I couldn't make my legs go in a full circle like they did when the characters ran on Scooby Doo. It never occurred to me that it couldn't be done.

I used to think that "The Omen" was about a bunch of people who could only say "O", the O-Men. I know this is wrong now, even though I'm about 5 years too young to actually watch "The Omen".

I used to think old radios would play only old music. For instance i thought my mom and dad's old radio would only play like Beatles and 60s music.

When I was about 10, my mother sent me into the grocery store to buy a bar of soap. I came out empty-handed and explained that they didn't have any soap; they only had Zest. (There was an ad at the time that claimed "Zest: it washes cleaner than soap," or words to that effect.)

When I was really young, I used to believe that cartoons were shot just like other television shows, just filmed with special cartoon cameras. The actors would wear costumes if they were playing the part of an animal.

I used to believe that when i heard a song on the radio that the people singing it were actually there in the studio and after they finished singing they would go to the next town to perform their song on the radio and so on. Guess they all would have got pretty tired hey.

I used to believe…

when i was little my mother would tell me if, at the end of videos, when the television made that horrible prolonged beep, if i didn't turn off the TV RIGHT AWAY the tv would EXPLODE. haha on me.

I used to believe that when you shut the car radio off, when you turned it back on the song would start from where you turned it off

I believed that an apartment building up the street from us was where they filmed the Mickey Mouse Club TV show. (It was VERY tall to a 6 year old...maybe 6 stories.)I didn't realize that the TV station was showing 15-20 year old re-runs of the show. I was convinced they were filming 4 blocks from my house and kept trying to convince my mom to take me there so i could be on the show.

I believed that when you turned on the radio, the sound came through long tubes extending from your radio to chambers in the sewer system (I'm from Paris), where people were singing or talking - because the sewers obviously were the only place in town with enough space to properly amplify so many voices. I imagined they could look out the grates while they worked and see cars zooming by...

I used to believe that people actually were inside the old radio and that you could look behind and see them. As a child my favourite music was bagpipes (still are) and whenever they were "on the air" and if I wasnt in the room, my brother would shout out,"Quick come and see them theyre marching past now", and I would run from where ever I was and just as I entered the room he would say, "Oh, youve just missed them, theyve gone now" I believed that bugger of a brother (I really loved him tho) for many many years!

I used to believe that the people on TV could see me and I wouldn't do anything rude when I was watching it. I guess I was around 4 or 5.

Thanks to the Warner Bros cartoon "Pepe LePew", I thought skunks came from France. I got really confused when Mum told me they actually came from America-took ages to work out that cartoon characters spoke however the director wanted.
