I used to mis-hear dialogue in films, and then never question it for years. For a long time, when Alderan was blown up in Star Wars, I thought the disturbance in the Force that Obi-Wan reacted to was millions of OYSTERS that had cried out in terror.

My theory as a kid was that all TV shows were real - they were just taking place on other planets. Cartoons took place on a relatively distant planet, but live-action shows (like 3-2-1 Contact), being more life-like, were from a planet between us and the cartoon planet.

When I was little i used to believe that cowboy movies actually were filmed in the time with cowboys and indians.
I saw a commercial that said, "Don't drink and drive", when I was 5. Later we were in the car and my dad was drinking a coke. I informed what the commercial said.

In the Wizard of Oz, the Scarecrow tells Dorothy that the only thing he's afraid of is a lighted match. Then Dorothy tells him that the witch is after her, and he says "I'd face a box full of them" to get her to the Wizard. I thought he meant a box full of witches instead of matches

When I was five, my parents had a huge New Year's Eve party. The next day a couple of the guests were still there, sitting with my brother and I as we ate breakfast. One of the guests had a bandage across her forehead. I guess she had had a little too much to drink and had fallen over and hurt herself. I asked if she went to the doctor and my Dad told me that the men from the TV show Emergency had come by to take care of her. For years, I was so mad at him for not waking me up to meet them!

I used to think that when a movie was 'based on a true story' it was happening for real then and there

When I was 4, and I was watching The Dick Van Dyke show on a small tv on the floor, I thought that if I turned the tv upside down, the people on the show would fall on the ceiling.
I used to believe that my Dad personally knew everyone on TV. We would always watch Indy racing on Saturday afternoons and I always thought that my Dad and Mario Andretti were close personal friends.

I always thought that every time you heard a song on the radio, that group was there LIVE singing the song. How they got to all of the stations to sing I didn't know, I always wondered how they did it.

I saw the movie ET when very young, and was quite frightened by it. I was scared that I would get sick and turn into a dying alien like when ET was captured by scientists. One night I was lying in bed and thought I saw ET pop up outside my window--I leapt out of bed and ran screaming to my parents' bedroom!

When I was about 7, I thought that there were so many car commercials on TV because people bought cars once a week or so, and I always wondered why my parents kept the same old car for so long.

When it first came out, I made my brother believe that "The Sopranos" was about our family because we're Italian and they always told us my great-great-great-grandfather was a mob guy.
I also told him our dad worked in "The West Wing." (it's very fun having brothers much more young and naive than you.) So whenever my dad goes on a business trip, my brother says, "Say hi to Donna (whom he has the biggest crush on) for me!" My dad still hasn't figured it out, and neither has my brother.

You know how the bottle for Mrs. Butterworth's pancake syrup looks like a little lady? When I was a child, the television commercials would show that bottle walking around on the table talking to people. I thought it was real. After all, it didn't look like a cartoon. When I would eat pancakes, I would stare intently at that bottle because if it so much as budged, I wasn't going to miss it. I always thought that the bottles we kept getting were broken because she didn't move or talk.
I used to believe that you can see the part that is not captured on the television screen if you tried hard enough to peek at the sides of your television.

I used to believe that newscasters were in my television and that they could see me, because their eyes followed me everywhere.

When I was a child, while watching a Disney cartoon with little talking squirrels (or chipmunks, or whatever) for characters, I remember once asking my mother how they got the actors into such tiny little costumes.
