When I would hear the Grand Am commercials, I thought the announcer was saying Gran Damn! I was very worried about what our society was coming to that we could swear on our commercials!

I was very adamant about the fact that Kermit the Frog's name was actually "Kermithy." He was never much for enunciation.

Joe DiMaggio used to be the official spokesperson in the Mr. Coffee commercials, and not knowing who he really was- I thought his name actually was "Mr. Coffee"!

Up until about two years ago I thought NPR's Morning Edition was brought to you by the few charitable trusts (not the Pugh Charitable Trusts)...oops

I used to believe that the girls on the TV show HEE HAW stuffed their shirts with big brown bowls, because nobody could have perfectly rounded tan boobs like they had.

When I was little I asked my older brother why The Beverly Hillbillies always said "Don't come back now, ya hear?" after the show. He said it was because there was a button on the back of the tv that you could push and watch the show over again. I asked him to show me so that I could watch King Kong, but he refused saying that I would make the Beverly Hillbillies have to do their program all over again. I was pretty old before it occurred to me that that was a big fat lie.

I used to think that it was soooo cool that the first person in line on Wheel of Fortune was always, coincidentally, the person that got to play the game first. It wasn't until I was in my late teens when I figured out that they flipped a coin before the game, and arranged the people in the right order!!!

When i was younger British Gas adverts all finished with a person clicking their fingers, and a flame came out of their thumb. i thought this was some great talent, and so would constantly practice this, thinking that some people genuinley could say 'british gas' click their fingers and ... the magic of fire.

if only i could...

A kid that lived near me was convinced that actors in action films were all in fact just wax dummies. We later discovered that his mother had informed him that the melting German agents at the climax of Raiders Of The Lost Ark were wax dummies, and he had taken this to mean that all people in films were made of wax!

I thought that there was a 'most handsome man on the planet' and that it was Christopher Reeve because my mother always told me that. Therefore, when someone was considered 'handsome', I thought it was because they looked a little bit like Christopher Reeve.

I used to think that if you got close enough to a TV and looked down, you could see the boobs of the girl in the shower.

When I was 12 my older sister told me how cool and funny Monty Python's Flying Circus was so when I had the chance i turned it on and for some bizarre reason there was actually a circus on the channel instead. For about 5 years I assumed she meant the circus. I could never figure out what the big deal was. You can imagine what a suprise "The Life of Brian" was to me.

I used to believe…

my favourite super hero was the green lantern so I asked my parents for a ring. they took me shopping and I found one that was shaped like home plate and had my initial carved on it.
when i was about 8 or 9 i was allowed to stay home for a couple of hours without a babysitter. so I zoned out in front of the television and flipped through the stations using the big brown box we used to have as a remote (3 rows of 12 or so rectangular buttons that you pressed down to get a new channel)
I ended up partially watching the Exorcist by myself. i say partially because i would press any other button quickly when it started to get too intense. However, I did manage to see enough of the movie to scare me into sleepless nights for almost a week. I would pull the covers over my head and clench the fist with the ring so tight that I would imagine a green lantern-type force field would suuround my bed - as long as my fist remained clenched.

In 1969 when I was six, my class were taken into the the class next door to watch the first moon walk LIVE on our new school tv. I did understand the concept of "live", as in happening right now, but I live in England, as then, and really believed, with childlike disgust, that our teachers were lying to us about this broadcast being "live" because how can you have live coverage of the moon, (only available at night) when it was a bright sunny day just before lunchtime? For years I believed this was really a recording that I saw, until in 1999 I watched a 30th anniversary programme about it when they gave out the time this happened in the UK. Then it all came flooding back to me and I realised that I had actually witnessed a live event. I felt humbled, you know and then I laughed and laughed. My own children thought I was truly stupid.

When I was little I had watched those old black and white "moving pictures" the ones that were made in the early part of the last century . People moved around in jerky movements on screen. I used to think that was how people really walked in those days.
