I used to believe…

When we got our first television, it was during a presidential convention week. Every time it was turned on it was the same program. I thought that it just picked up where it left off when you turned it on.

I used to believe that the map they show on the weather-rapport only showed half the world, and I couldn't wait to grow up and travel around exploring the rest of it! No need to say I was heart-broken when I found out I was stuck on this side of the (boring) world!

when i was small, i used to watch Popeye cartoons alot and i was convinced that eating a can of spinach would give me super-strength. i kept pestering my mom for canned spinach, until she finally gave in. YUCKO! i ate a few bites, went outside and attempted to lift our house off its foundation. no luck. i though maybe i hadn't eaten enough of the spinach, so i went back inside and forced down the entire contents of the can. when i failed to lift the house after that, i knew i'd been tricked. the whole Popeye story was a fake.

When I was little... My parents used to threaten my brother and I about... Well, their choice of a babysitter for us. "If you don't stop misbehaving," they'd say, "We'll get Freddy Kreuger to come babysit you!" And we fell for it. Every time. It wasn't until later that I realized Freddy exsisted only in the movies...

I always wondered how James Bond could tell his real name to everyone and why the bad guys never recognized him from the movies. Maybe they just didnt know the movies...

I used to believe that spinach made me strong. Popeye was a popular cartoon back then. I ate spinach one night and then ran outside to where our little swingset had fallen over. I picked it up and righted it, and had proof that, yes, spinach works. But I still never ate much of it.

As a young child, I knew things on TV were in black and white and therefore "not real". I could never understand what my dad found so facinating about "the news"- it was just a person sitting there talking!

Many friends had color TV's, but it was still fake, they were just special. It was color films at school and daycare that confused me most. It was on TV so it MUST be fake, but it was at school, so it must be real.... what a conundrum.

I used to believe that there were people in the T.V. and if you knocked on the glass hard enough they would come out of the screen.

I used to believe that songs that I heard on the radio were preformed by the band live on a big stage at the radio station.

When I was 3 or 4, I remember thinking that when I sat watching TV, the actors/actresses or cartoon characters could see me too! So there I sat, furiusly waving at Yogi Bear, wondering all the while why he was so rude not to wave back! This dumb idea stuck in my head for a few years more, because I remember vividly running upstairs to my room, getting my prettiest dress on, brushing my hair, and then sitting real pretty and lady-like on the chair so Dr. Gannon (Chad Everett) would think I was a pretty little girl. Sheesh!

When I was a kid, long before computer animation (I'm 40, it's 2002), I thought that cartoons were people dressed up in costumes. Moving drawings? NO WAY!

My mom use to tell us if we sat close to the TV we'd have to wear glasses. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I don't sit close to the TV, and I wont let my kids do it either.

Around age five I started to think about why it was we watched little people on the t.v., so finally just to clear things up I had to ask if we were being watched some where on someone's t.v., always freaked me out when going to the bathroom to think I was on someones television.

I used to believe that when a TV cameraman used his camera to film something, the image passed straight through the camera, through his eye and body and up to the transmitter aerial. I could never understand why the screen DIDN'T go black every time hewould blink. I even drew diagrams to explain my theories.
