I used to believe…

This won't mean much to most Americans, but...

A couple of years ago, when Ali G first started appearing on the 11 O'Clock
Show, I used to confuse him with Goldie. I am now (almost) 22.

When I was about five, I used to think that music on radio came from bands who were actually in the studio for every song. I wondered how the Village People could get from one studio to the next so quickly.

When I was about 5 or 6, I used to believe that there were actually tiny musicians inside radios playing the songs. Since our radio in the old days only had one or two stations, I thought they switched the people paying when you changed the station.

I knew that films were made by joining lots of static photos together, and therefore assumed that they made films by taking a photo, moving the actors, taking another photo...

I wondered how they made films of sporting events and assumed they re-created them after the event.

I used to believe that when I heard people on the radio (not the presenters) they had walked along a really rickety walkway and were speaking to the presenter through a small window. No idea where it came from and, frankly, I don't want to know.

I thought that, when an actor kissed another actor on tv, they had to get that actor's spouse to stand in for the other actor, because it was wrong to kiss anyone other than your own spouse. I think this was inspired by an episode of Mork & Mindy somehow.

I used to believe that when you heard a song on the radio, that artist had to come in and perform it. It never occured to me that people might be playing tapes like we had at home. When I heard the same musician on more than one station, it astounded me how fast they could make it from one station to the next!

When Fraggle Rock was a popular cartoon, my parents got a big box with the word "Fragile" on it. Of course, I thought this was a big present for me with Fraggles inside.

Because of the hit Brit sit-com Dad's Army I used to believe my dad would go off every Thursday and fight in a war. Because every Thursday was dad's army...

When ever I saw a movie, I thought the film crew filmed a child for the necessary scenes and then filmed the rest of the movie when the kid grew up years later. So I always thought it took ages to make movies, so I never became an actor :)

I used to believe…

that actors went to the toilet during the ad breaks.

I used to believe Sesame Street was an actual place, and that the Muppets were real, and if one were to learn their ABCs and their numbers, one could become worthy of visiting Sesame Street. By the time I got down counting one to twenty, wherever I went I was hoping I'd magically find Sesame Street just around the next corner...

I used to think that actors and actresses on television programmes where actually realistically drawn cartoon characters.

My mother used to watch General Hospital when I was a kid. There was one character who went to the nut house. A while later the character came back but was played by a different actress. I used to think that people who went to mental institutions came back as totally different looking people.

— Melissamedia : tv shows

I use to think that all TV shows were made in massive hidden studios in the local TV station. Although I never could figure out how they got the Wheel of Fortune in there.

I used to beleive that radio DJ's would sing all the songs... if there was a lady singing a song it was his wife or sister... hehe. I thought that for quite a long time....

I used to believe that the Ed Sulivan Show was called "The Ed's Elephant Show," because they always had circus acts...

i used to believe that all television was live. and that if an actor were appearing on two shows at the same time, they were running around backstage to get to their places on different sets. i was always amazed that they weren't out of breath doing this.

One night, when I was six, I saw a car salesman doing a tv commercial in broad daylight. I mentioned to my aunt (she was 11) that the salesman must have been on the other side of the world because the sun was shining. She rudely tried to explain to me about pre-recorded film. I think I got that part. But I still don't understand how the images get to the tv in my house.

When my mam was a little kid, she would change to get ready for bed in the living room. Her granny always made her get changed behind the couch, in case the newsreader on the TV could see her. And the granny REALLY believed this! "Of course he can see you - at the end of the programme he says 'See you tomorrow' - he wouldn't say that if he couldn't see you"
