I used to believe…

My favorite show was Sailor Moon when I was little, and I began hoping and hoping she was real. I was old enough to pretty much know, cartoon characters weren't real, but I kinda thought maybe she was. So I remember one night, actually several nights in a row, I left out a note saying "Sailor Moon, if you are real, please leave me something like your transformation brooch or your wand." Needless to say it never happened...much to my disappointment.

When I was little and watched shows like Sesame Street and Barney, I understood that the characters were really people in costumes. But I also thought that it was VERY hard to memorize lines, and so they would have the script taped up inside their costume, so they could just read it during the show instead of actually learning their lines. I also thought this about regular television shows... whenever a person on a show acts like they are reading something, they are actually reading their next line.

I used to believe that when someone was leaving a message on the answering machine that they could hear you like on the telephone. I wasnt supolsed to answer the phone when I was home alone, in case someone was calling to find out if I was alone and come kidnap me! Every time the phone rang and someone left a message, I would mute the TV and run to the next room terrified that someone could hear me and come and take me!

When I first watched the movie Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts, her prostitute friend referred to someone as a "crack head". I had no idea what this term meant. I visualized a woman with a split running through the middle of her head.

My mother used to believe that there were very tiny people inside radios that gave you the news, or made the music, or whatever else went on. One day, she asked how the people got inside the radio, and people laughed. I believe that was about when she found out that there were no people in the radios.

When watching the show Are You Afraid of the Dark at my grandma's house, I would always sit with my feet under me, in fear that a clown would come out of the TV and tickle my feet and that I would pee my pants.

When I was very little I believed that every time you watched a movie the actors would have to be notified and would have to re-enact the entire movie while it was broadcast on the TV. I was always amazed that they didn't blink while the movie was paused.

I used to think the songs I heard on the radio were being sung live in the radio station studio. I remember being very embarassed when my uncle explained to me Tina Turner could be on two radio stations because they were both playing her records

I also remember thinking Pia Zadora was named P. Isadora. Of course it wouldn't matter, since no one cares about P. Isadora, or whatever her name is.

I used to believe that people on TV could see me in my living room. For example, at the end of the "Ed Sullivan Show," they would bring on all the acts from that night's show, and they would all wave at the camera. I used to wave back because I thought they could see me.

I used to believe…

When we moved into our new house, I was convinced that my step-dad had cameras everywhere in the house to watch and make sure I wasn't doing anything bad while my parents were at work (he always seemed to know that I'd watched the satellite tv). I thought that the only safe place was in my closet, so I spent a lot of time in there. I also looked everywhere for the tell-tale blinking red light so that I could get rid of the cameras.

Of course, one day he told me that the tv could tell him everything I'd watched. I was much more paranoid after that.

I used to believe…

When I was little I was terrified of a commercial with dancing pants. Every time the commercial would come on my mom would act like she was calling the cable company to tell them to quit airing it. That would work until the commercial came on again, and then she'd have to "get angry" at them for not listening to her the first time.

I used to believe…

When watching shows such as Americas Most Wanted or Unsolved Mysteries, I would get angry during reenactments. I thought what I was seeing was the crime videotaped and I could not understand why someone didn't stop it.
