I used to believe…

When I learned to read the TV guide, I thought "To Be Announced" was the name of a TV Show.

I thought it was like "To Tell The Truth," and eventually I convinced myself I had heard it introduced with that same kind of deep male narrator voice:

"TO BE....[pause]....ANNOUNCED!"

I used to believe that people were inside the radio. And when I say "radio" I'm referring to the electronic equipment.
I remember wondering how so many people such as DJ's, singers, and bands could fit into such a small space. :)

When I was five, the television advertisement for one brand of sanitary napkin would feature models wearing polka dotted dresses. I truly believed that "Carefree" was actually clothes that are sold in the local grocery stores and asked my mom to buy me carefree clothes for my birthday.

My father was watching Camelot one evening (yes...the musical with Robert Goulet and Richard Harris). There is one scene when King Arthur is furious with his wife because she is being so unkind and unwelcoming to Sir Lancelot. The character of King Arthur has a song that he sings about it. At the beginning of the song, he is quite loud and slams a door or two. When I asked my dad why, he told me that it was because King Arthur drank some cola at dinner and the caffeine was keeping him up. He was unhappy and upset because he couldn't sleep.

I am ashamed to admit how many years I believed *that* one....

In our town we have a radio station that has had an ad that runs about selling ads on that station. The ad itself says "Radiads, the sound seller". Since I was a kid, I am now 36, I always hear tha ad as "Radiads, the sound cellar". I picture a dark cellar with lots of reel to reel tape and cassettes.
Also in "Papa was a rolling stone" I always thought that they sang, "...and when he died, all he ever left us was a loan". He left them in debt.

I USED TO BELIFE THAT TV SHOWS WERE REAL

I used to believe…

My grandmother told me when I was a child that, if I watch too much television my eyes would become permanently locked on the screen and I would be stuck like that forever. SO, whenever I watched TV or movies, I would divert my eyes every 3 or 4 minutes or so either by closing them, hiding beneath a pillow or standing up in the middle of the room and facing the other way. There are whole swaths of childrens movies that I still have no idea how they ended or who most of the characters were.

When I was a preschooler, I had to go with my mother to the grocery store on day. I didn't want to leave because I was watching cartoons on t.v. I figured out that if I turned the t.v. off, I would be able to watch the rest of the cartoon when I came home and turned the t.v. back on. When I got back home, I told my mother that I couldn't find the channel that my cartoon was supposed to be on. When she broke the news about the situation, I was devastated.

There was this manhole in the middle of our playground for some reason and me and my friends would stand around it all day long listening for the Ninja Turtles.

I used to believe that Barney the Dinosaur was real, the school where it was filmed was real and the kids in it actually went to that school. For years I wanted to live in America and go to that school just so I could be in Barney and be friends with these kids!

I used to believe…

Remember the emergency alert system? How it would always say, "This is a test. Had this been a real emergency, this alarm would be followed by safety instructions" or something to that effect? As a kid I never EVER heard them say, "It's for real this time, no fooling around!" So naturally I assumed it was the government's practical joke on us and that the president and all his men were sitting in their offices giggling at how stupid we were.

I used to think that the cars won on 'Wheel Of Fortune' were only borrowed by the contestants, who got to drive them home, but then had to drive them back to the next contestant could win it. (back then, all cars looked the same to me)

When you here studio audiences reacting to things, I used to think this was other people at home watching. I also thought that if I laughed loud enough or shouted things, they'd be able to hear me!!

I saw on a cartoon, that if you sit too close to the TV it would suck your brain out, I sat too close to the TV to watch a video and later that night, I wonder if I still had a brain!
