As a child, I was for a long time perplexed by the reference to "the land of the free and the home of the brave" in the last line of the U.S. national anthem (The Srar Spangled Banner). I thought it referred to two separate parts of the U.S. I tried for awhile drawing maps, coloring states two separate colors, trying to figure out correctly which states made up the land of the free and which ones made up the home of the brave.

There was a girl that used to come over and play with me and my sister and we would listen to Blackstreet "No Diggity" all the time. She picked up on some of the lyrics and would sing "I like the way you work here, no diggity, I like the way you bag it up" Instead of "I like the way you work it, no diggity, I like the way you back it up"
It was the cutest thing.

My parents listened to country a lot and there was a song by Garth Brooks called "I'm Shameless" and I thought he was saying "I'm shavin"

The song "America The Beautiful" with its last line "From sea to shining sea" had me perplexed for quite some time. I puzzled arduously over which, of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, was shining and which was not.

As a school kid growing up in the U.S. I was always quite disturbed when we sang "My country 'tis of thee". The line "Land where my fathers died" really perplexed me because I and my classmates mostly had fathers who were still alive.

My friend's little sister thinks the lyrics to Hollaback Girl go, "A few times I been round that track so it stomps just to have feet like that"
I used to believe that the song by Fatboy Slim that goes "Right about now, funk soul brother, check it out now, the funk soul brother" went "Right about now, funk short rubber, check it out now, the funk short rubber". I loved that song in like third grade and would sing it on the way home from swimming lessons, but could never figure out why Mom would laugh at me...

My friend and I were singing our favorite song "You're So Vain" and when the line "You're where you should be all the time, and when you're not you're with someone like the wife of a close friend, wife of a close friend and" or something like that. My friend turned to me and my other friend and said, "See this is the part I don't get. What's a ploseman?" So then we contemplated and thought it must be postman. So we would always sing "wife of a postman, wife of a postman and..." until my friend's mom said it was close friend.LOL!

Last month I heard the song "Living on a Prayer" (I'm 15), and I thought it was "Living on a Brayer," as in a donkey ('cause they bray). I was convinced it was about a guy riding cross-country on a donkey: "We're halfway there," meant they were near Oklahoma.

The line in Jamiroquai's 'Canned heat' that goes "I've got so much canned heat in my heels" used to sound to me like "I've got so much candy in my ears". It wasn't until a few years ago (when I was 15) that somebody pointed out this schoolboy error vwhen I was singing along to it. Well.... half right's not too bad....
