My cousin (he´s 10), still thinks that the title of "I´m like a bird" (that song of Nelly Furtado),is something like "I mac a be...". I really don´t understand what he means with it.

My grandma used to hold me on her lap and sing the "I love you! A bushel and a peck..." song. I was an adult before I knew that it was from the musical GUYS AND DOLLS, and that my grandma didn't write it. My little brother and I were both pretty sad that she didn't make up that song for us--we assumed she had...

I used to believe…

When I was about five my mother told me all about Elvis, and I remember her specifically noting that Elvis had a daughter and had died "before he even got to know her." I figured that the only reason she could be telling me this was that Elvis must be my real father! Needless to say I was disappointed to learn about Lisa-Marie some five or six years later.

For some time, I thought Eric Clapton was singing "Captain Midnight" (in the song "After Midnight.)
I always believed that Kenny Rogers' 'Lucille' went
"you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, with four hungry children and a box of oatmeal..."
I hated oatmeal and could understand why the children were hungry!
An older neighbor got me into the Violent Femmes. Until I was in college I thought, "I fall down dead, she never sees the tears I cry" was actually "I fall down STAIRS, she'll never see the tears I cry."
You know, how tragic? I fell down the stairs and she didn't even care!

For ages I thought the lyrics to "I shot the sherif was: "Hey, chocolate cherry" I never could understand what the deputy had to do it...
I always thought that singers had to sing the same song over and over again when they were recording their records, i.e. every copy of a record had to be recorded seperately. I would imagine singers being very happy finally finishing a single, and then getting angry at a record company boss who told them to do the same procedure all over again for an LP or one of those cheap K-Tel compilations. Daft.
I used to believe…
a case study of a child with an active imagination and waxy ears.
My little sister has gradually disabused me of these notions, between peals of derisory hysterical laughter.
I believe in mackerel ... where ya from, you sexy thing

oh yes, and she almost wet herself when i pronounce Jamiroquai as 'jammyrokey'. That doesn't really count as a childhood belief, though, because it was, erm, very recent.

I used to believe that Marilyn Manson was a extremely scary woman!
When we were little, my brother sang "Volare," at top volume with the lyric "Oh-Lah-Tay." He sang it all summer and nearly drove the family nuts.
I spent much of my childhood wondering what a "donserly light" was in the Star Spangled Banner.
The refrain of "Flashdance" is "Take your passion and make it happen." I used to sing "Take your pants off and make it happen." I guess I had a dirty mind as a kid.
I used to think that the theme song for the Brady Bunch said "They were born and living all together" instead of "they were four men living all together." I could never understand why the lyrics made so little sense!
As I´m brazilian and speak portuguese, when I was about 8 or 9, I thought Ray Charles was the king of Britain, ´cos you pronnounce "Ray" as "rei", and "Rei" means King in portuguese. I always heard of the queen of England and the 'REI' Charles (not togheter, of course). You can imagine the mess in my head thinking "why is the king of Britain blind? Why is he playing the piano with such a wide smile ???". In fact, I began to think the Queen and the 'King Ray Charles' were divorced, because I never saw them in the same place. Weird...
When I was a kid, I heard my parents talking about Madonna as a bad influence, coz kids would want to be like her if they saw her or listen to her music. Everytime she appeared on the telly or sang on the radio I ran away, afraid to someday start to wear ladies underpants and act like a woman.
There's a song by Kenny Rogers that goes "take my hand, let's go through this door..." (at least that's what I think he's saying). For the longest time, I thought he was singing "let's go through the store". I wondered which store could it be. I also thought of that line every time I walked into the grocery store.
In the Blues Brothers song "Soul Man" they sing, "I'm a Soul Maaan..." I thought they were singing, "I was Sooo maaad!!"
My dad used to sing the song "It's Raining, It's Pouring" to me when I was a kid. When he came to the part that goes "and he couldn't get up in the morning" I used to think he said "and he cooked it up in the morning". I had this scary mental picture of an old man bumping his head so hard that his head fell off, and then he cooked his OWN HEAD the next morning. Why, I don't know. I am laughing so hard right now while typing this that I have tears coming out of my eyes.
Around 1994 (I think), my friends and I were sitting around listening to oldies. The song "Little Deuce Coupe" came on, and one girl, Teresa, actually sang out loud "Little Best Cook". We all just looked at her in total shock. I mean, at this time our average age group was about 21, but come on, it doesn't sound like that to me. Thanks to Teresa for one of the funniest things I have ever heard!
