When I was little I used to believe that each country was on a different planet. After I learned about continents, I thought that they all floated on top of the oceans. After I learned about continental drift, I thought we could watch (down at the beach or somewhere) as the other continents came smashing into us (or us into them). I thought that if I was really lucky, a volcano might grow in our back garden overnight.

I thought that if you ate less than 30 minutes before going into the water to swim, if you got into the water up to at least your stomach, you would instantly drown. And I had no idea WHY this was -- I never questioned it!

When I was little my sister and I, and everyone we hung around with, believed that common sumac (the kind with the big red conelike flowers) was something horribly deadly called "Poison Sycamoe." If you touched it, you would die. Imagine my surprise when I read in a nature book that you could brew the red flowers into a lemony flavored tea!

Once when I was young I saw a movie where some nuns fell out of a boat and began to drown. I said, "What's wrong?" "They're drowning." After that, I was scared to get into the tub until my mother told me it wasn't "drowning water". After that, I believed there was a difference between regular water and "drowning water". Some time later, we saw a movie where two people were in a boat on a storm. I asked my mother with concern, "Is it drowning water?" She replied that it was. That was a scary movie!!
