Growing up in Roswell, NM I used to believe that the mountains were purple because all I ever saw of mountains was El Capitan and that was the way it appeared. Imagine my surprise when we finally visited the mountains and I found out that they were dirt, trees and rocks just like the plains I grew up on.

I used to think that #1- Lightning was God and the angles bowling #2 The sliver of the moon I saw in the sky was God's toenail clipping??? (Don't ask me-I don't know) and that a local road called Loop 338 was "Luke 3:38" and they just named the road that cause they were Christians.

On being told that earth was round, and gravity holds everything down to the earth, I somehow thought that we were inside the "hollow" ball, and if we flew upwords we would reach Australia.

When I was a child I used to believe...

...that when it snowed a lot, like over 8 inches, and the snow collected on the lawns, I would look at it and just know that the lawn wasn't there anymore...it was all just snow now...and if I dared walk on it, I would fall right through...fall and fall and fall, no bottom! Once my sister pushed me onto the "bottomless" lawn and I screamed bloody murder till my Dad came and picked me up, has was shovelling, so he took a moment and shovelled me right up, and I was safe again. Whew, it was a close call I tell ya!

I used to believe that we lived inside the earth instead of on it and that rockets headed for space had to break through the "top" of the earth first.

I used to believe you got high tides when the sea was full (I lived on the Thames, then)

When I was very young my Grandfather told me how the moon was made of Green Cheese. My evil older sister told me how the moon was important to life everywhere, and if it wasn't here we would all die. She also told me everytime I ate cheese from earth, I was taking it away from the moon, and if I ate too much cheese, the world would colapse. She was always mean.

I can't remember where I picked this one up, but since I was little I've called dandeliion seeds fairies.

I used to believe that if you were wet, say from being in the pool or running through the sprinkler, and you walked near something that smelled very badly, say dog poo or garbage, that the smell would stick to you.

I used to believe…

unfortunately, i have no idea whether this is a lie or not... but my mother told me that if i picked dandelions i would wet the bed! (of course, i've never dared to try!)

I used to believe…

That hurricanes were big truckers who drove around causing damage because noone was big enough to stop them. This came from them having peoples names and seeing an image on TV of a trucker getting into a truck to clear some wreckage after a hurricane hit

My 7 year old daughter was watching the news with me when they mentioned that the Mir Space Station would be "crashing down tonight". She was almost hysterical, certain that it was going to fall directly on her bed.

I used to believe that sattelite dishes were used to shot down falling meteors that fell to earth.

i used to believe that the world consisted of a flat bit of ground, with a few different coloured layers beneath it, with my street and all the houses lined up on that dirt, and the sky above. I must have been 3 or 4.

I used to believe…

a friend of mine once told me that the universe was infinite. When i asked him to elaborate his explantation he told me that if i just kept thinking about it my head would explode. i took him completely seriously and during science lessons would sometimes burst into tears at being forced to contemplate space.

When I was a child, riding in a car at nighttime, I would occasionally see a full moon. I believed it was a bathroom ceiling light fixture. I still feel that way.

When I was a child I believed that the atmosphere was really a dome with a handle on it that could be lifted off at any moment. I would lie on the grass, look up into the sky, and wonder if God would see me looking up at him when he lifted the dome off the Earth.
