A few years ago when I was in Grade 4, I used to believe that the sun would come up from a little pond in America and when it was time to rise, it would return to that little pond. Pretty dumb, hey?!

I used to love to stare at the moon when I was younger. My mum told me if I point at the moon, my ear would drop off / be cut off.
I had visions of a moon man (obviously with a face like the moon) coming down and slicing off my ears with his moon knife.

I'm 22 now. I still won't point at the moon.

My Grandmother had an ornamental chilli plant, with lots of small brightly coloured chillies on it. I was convinced that it was a jelly bean tree and thought she was lying to me because she didn't want me to eat them all. Suffice to say I learnt the hard way.

I used to believe that thunder was the sound of angels bowling, rain was when they were taking a shower, and lighting was when one of them was shocked.

When I was a kid we used to live next to an airforce base in California during the 80's. The 80's being the cold war era, one of my biggest fears was nuclear war... especially with all the made for TV movies on the subject.
Well one night I was awoken by a loud BOOM and a flash of light so bright it seemed like someone turned the all the lights in the house on and off. The booms and flashes continued over and over. Immediately I began to pray in earnest and in a cold sweat.... until I realized it was a thunder storm.
In my defense I had never experienced a thunderstom in my life and it was the worst one on record for that small town.

My crochety great aunt who my older sister and I couldn't stand used to live next door. To try and stop her from coming over, my sister used to make me dig holes for her to cover with leaves in the hopes that she would fall down one never to be seen again. I guess our depth perception was lacking because these traps were about two feet deep maximum. However, me sister would order me to stop digging periodically and feel the bottom of the pit to make sure it wasn't getting warm, as our mother had shown us a Time/Life book with a picture of the center of the earth and we didn't want to spring a geyser of hot molten lava.

My mother told us, and I still believe this by the way, that if you make loud noises during a thunder storm, the thunder will get louder and louder. So, when we were little, depending on our mood we'd either be VERY quiet, or be as noisy as possible.

My mom led my 2 younger sisters and I to believe that if you pointed at a rainbow you would make it dissappear and that was bad luck. I don't know about my sisters, but I still will NOT point at a rainbow!
