I used to think that fog was solid. Like cotton candy. Whenever we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge when it was shrouded in fog I would scream if the windows were rolled down. I was convinced the fog would force it's way inside and suffocate us. It wasn't until my mother pointed out to me the many happy people in their cars, with their windows rolled down, that I finally believed we would not die.

When I was younger my family would often take trips up into the mountains to our lake house. During my first trip up my mom announced that we were going to start climbing the mountain. Of course, she meant we were going to stay in the car and follow the road up but I was convinced she had packed grappling hooks and harnesses and we were going to climb the mountain like they do Mt. Everst. I immediately burst into tears, scared for my life. My mom eventually calmed me down and, hey, I got an ice cream cone out of it.

I'm not sure where this thought originated--if I misconstrued something someone said, or if my cousin babysitter hinted at it. I used to believe that tornadoes were huge, muscled black men with sleeveless white t-shirts and khaki-colored pants that were either rolled or cuffed to their knees. Whenever our part of the country experienced tornado weather, I thought these men were responsible for carrying our houses and cars away. Thankfully, I am grown and ashamed of this childish visual.

When I was little the family was driving in the country when my mother said "Look at the beautiful daffodils!". I looked out the window and saw a row of power line towers and for the next few years I believed that's what a daffodil was.

And when I was little I believed that the Moon was really the Earth and there no Moon at all. My mom then confronted me with this question: if that is the Earth, and there is no moon, what are we standing on? I patiently explained to her that there is a huge ziplock baggy hanging from the moon with dirt in it -- and that is what we were standing on.

When I was about in grade 2, I used to believe that I could control the wind by singing. I thought of myself as somekind of goddess. I had even convinced other kids in the school yard that by singing I could make the wind blow.

When i was about 4 years old, i was really afraid of thunder. Around that time, my aunt had a poster of Tom Cruise in her bedroom and in order to shut me up, whenever there was a thunderstorm she used to show me the poster and tell me that the thunder was just the sounds Tom Cruise's farts.
