When I was about in grade 2, I used to believe that I could control the wind by singing. I thought of myself as somekind of goddess. I had even convinced other kids in the school yard that by singing I could make the wind blow.

I used to believe that when it rained, the people in heaven were all taking showers. I believed that they had showers made out of clouds, and that as they showered God would watch them making sure they didn't waste too much water. So rain drops were special, because they had touched the bodies of relatives who had already died.

I used to believe that a tornado was the Big Bad Wolf (from Three Little Pigs) driving around in a police car. Living in Kansas, we had quite a few tornadoes... One, in particular, came pretty close to our house. When the warnings were issued, my mom called me in from playing outside, but before I could go in I had to go to the end of the driveway and look down the street for the "tornado". I told my mom I didn't see it coming, but had to go in anyway. Imagine my surprise when I saw the real thing!

When I was younger, my mom has dumped out some of those flat marbles that you put in fish tanks to make it look pretty in the backyard. A few years later I was playing back there and I found one. It had been hailing earilier that day, and I thought it was a colored hailstone that hadn't melted yet. I stuck it in the freezer.

A few days later, it was gone.

I thought my cat ate it.

My dad had me convinced that dark storm clouds were actually webs for monstrous "cloud spiders." The first time I flew straight into one of those clouds as a kid (dad was a small-plane pilot), I was terrified and convinced we were flying into a web. Dark clouds still freak me out.

Back in kindergarden, my friend and me used to run after snowflakes, yelling at them. We imagined they would get frightened and thus multiply to "defend" themselves. And that was just what we wanted - the more snow, the better.

i used to think that when it was foggy outside that the world had turned upside down and the clouds were on the ground instead of in the sky.

In elementary school, I misread the word "cumulus" and thought cumulus clouds were actually "Columbus clouds." I realized by sixth grade that I'd been wrong, but I still like the picture "Columbus clouds" gives me of the explorer leaning forward at the front of the ship, guided by the huge stacks of white clouds passing across a cerulean blue sky. So for me, "Columbus clouds" they will remain.

I used to think that clouds were made out of snow. In the summer I would stare at the "snow" up in the sky and wish that it would fall down.

When I was little I used to believe that the wind was created and controlled by the police. I imagined huge fans the size of a house placed in the middle of the forest blowing winds in a controlled fashion. Of course the police were the only ones allowed in the forests for this reason. I believed this until the day I officially learned about wind at school.

In August of 1979 I was 4 1/2 and my mom was pregnant with my baby sister. We lived in Florida and Hurricane David was heading our way. I remember people were taping and boarding up their windows. My mom was miserably pregnant and kept saying she wanted the hurricane to come because it would make her go into labor. I would always think of a helicopter being flown by a man named David, because I had no idea what a hurricane really was. I thought the helicopter was going to land in the courtyard of our apartment complex and that people were taping and boarding the windows because the wind from the rotors was going to blow them out.
