I truly believed that body shops were there for those that wanted to replace their own body parts. The fact that there were always people hanging around reenforced the thought. How I wish it were true!

A belief I held high for a long, long time: Allotment gardens were the result of our Dutch government's bigoted perception of handicaped people.
People with achondroplasia (dwarfism) were forced to live outside of town, in special little villages at the edge of town or along the highway, because they would only cause trouble in a busy town's traffic; according to our government their anatomy would probably make them not manoeuvrable enough to cross busy roads (people in central Holland drive like maniacs), and they would be too short for people to notice.

This belief held ground --and made my blood boil for the injustice-- until I was 15, because it made sense. Most allotment gardens have sheds that look like miniature houses (complete with cosy-looking curtains) and most have all sorts of vegetables growing - indicating the need for self-sufficiency.

... Phew.

I used to th that the 'To Let' signs on buildings said 'toilet' and was always amazed how many public loos there were and wondered why we had to stop at service stations for rest breaks when there were loos everywhere!

Up until I was about 8, I used to think that EVERYTHING had feelings in some way or another. When we used to go clothes shopping, I would say that I liked the most hideous outfits when my ma or sister said they were ugly, because I thought the clothes would be upset.
I also did this with products in chain stores, thinking that the sales clerks would be offended if I didn't like something they were selling, not realising that they were just working there to pay the bills!

When I was little my brother told me that the electrical towers where dinosaurs...So every time I passed the towers, I would scream and tell my dad to drive faster.

I used to believe…

every sunday we would go get McDonalds after church. I though the mcnuggets would get sad if i didn't pick them, but then if I picked them too much then the burger would get sad.

seriously, i made my mom remember so i would always go every-other

I used to think that drains in pools and bathtubs were deadly. I never went anywhere within more than seven feet from one in fear of being quickly sucked in and having my body cut up into many tiny pieces to go through the little holes. My dad dropped a penny once near the drain and went to go get it to prove to me that it was OK to go near it - I came pretty close to tears as I saw him swim toward that drain, I thought my daddy was dead meat :(

I used to believe that a killer whale lived in the deep end on my local swimming bath, but he didn't ever come out because he could only live in the deep part.

I also remember my mum talking about why she didn't like rodents because when she was small she picked up a gerbil by its tail when it was dead, and I thought she meant 'turtle' so for the longest time I thought that gerbils were a type of turtle.

I was told by a Carowinds employee when I was a kid that the waves in their wave pool were created by elephants underneath it. They would feed them peanuts and they would stomp their feet which created the waves.

When I saw "NO PARKING" painted on the pavement near the curb, I read "NO" upside down as "ON". I thought that was where your car was supposed to be with the engine running, thus being "on". "PARKING" was where you were supposed to park.

When I was little, my dad told me that the paddock things in the middle of the road (they're actually for crossing) that have grass in them were used for keeping bulls in!!! I beleived him until recently.

I used to believe that the shoe repair chain Mr Minit was in fact called Mr Mint, and if we went there often enough they'd give me a mint one day.

My parents used to always say "Stop yelling, the neighbors will hear you!" I thought that "the neighbors" were a quartet of male singers

i used to think that if you don't step off the escalator when toy get to the top that you would get sucked down underground and your clothes would be left behind and that for the rest of your life you would live in an underground nudist colony!

There's a noon siren in my town, and it sounds almost identical to an air raid siren that they used in England during WW11. When I was little ( around five years old), I watched a movie set back then, and my brother told me that the siren meant people were going to bomb the town. For the longest time, everyday at noon I ran inside, so I wouldn't get hit by a bomb. It didn't occur to me that IU had been outside many times at noon, and was never hit by a bomb.

My mum always told me that when the icecream van is playing music it means they're out of icecream. I used to be so disappointed that they were always out of icecream when they got to my street.

Our local shopping centre is built on an old quarry, so the underground car park has sheer rock walls. My nan used to tell me to stay close to her or the dragon that lived down there would 'get' me. As I had a habit of not staying with my mum and nan, this kept me very close to them whenever I was at this shopping centre. I believed this tale for a very, very long time. I enjoyed passing the tale on to my little brother ten years later.
