When I was little my parents took me swimming, and they warned me that if I had an accident, it would react with the chemicals and a bright trail would follow me and everyone would know. Needless to say i was terrified that it would happen and their warning did work. I actually did beleive this until I was almost 12! I will definately be using this on my future kids!

i used to believe shopkeepers lived in their on shops
There was an adult bookstore on the main drag in our town. When I was a child, I was pretty bookish, so it was only natural that I'd want to go see what was in "The Book Ranch". I asked to go in every time we drove by, but mom would always change the subject. It wasn't until high school that I knew why.

My brother used to think that the brushes at automatic car washes were Sulley from Monsters Inc.
Our local store used to have a huge plastic icecream above the door to advertise a particular brand and until I was about 12, I thought it was Donald Duck with his head stuck in a giant cone with just his butt sticking out.
When My cousin and I were kids, he told me that "IceCapades" (a live ice skating show that you could go see) was really gross and had lots of naked people. It wasn't until years later that I realized that he had confused IceCapades with "Escapades" (an adult cable network).
in my city there are lots of signs on buildings saying "To-let". I always thought there were just an oddly large number of people who spelled toilet wrong... until i realised the building was for sale.
I used to believe that the highway signs reading "No Littering up to $100 fine" meant that if you found some litter and turned it in, you could get up to $100....even though it was "fine" and not "found" or "if found"... I assured myself this was a mere grammatical error...and always kept my eyes peeled for trash.
I used to believe that when you moved house, you swapped homes with the other owners, who would then move into your old home.
When I was a child, I thought there was someone in the neighborhood who had all the houses. Her name was Sally, but spelled Sale. Then, one day, my father told me that all the signs that said, "For Sale," actually meant something else.
At the pool where I took swimming lessons as a kid, there was a list of rules, including one that said "Shower in the nude before using the pool." That sign baffled me for years because I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the "nude" was.

My mum used to tell me that when the ice cream van came around it played the music to tell children that it was bed time. The van used to go past my house at noon.
