I used to believe that the garbage man was a homeless person who would collect trash to sort through it for food. I would sneak parts of my meals into the trashcan for him to find.

I used to belive that there were tiny people in vending machines that gave you your food.
There used to be a store in our neighborhood that sold blinds and drapes for windows. It was called Habitat. My daughter asked me one day if it was a home for blind people.
When I was about 8 I really wanted a Game Boy but I couldn't afford one. At the time, Walmart was using the slogan "Lower prices everyday" and I took the slogan literally: I thought that every day they would lower the price on every item by a few pennies. So I thought that if I waited long enough, the Game Boy would cost only a few dollars and I could afford it easily!
I used to be scared of the drain at the bottom of the pool, especially the big one at the community pool. I imagined it would suddenly suck me down to the underworld and there was a monster down there that wanted me. I stayed scared of pool drains for a very long time.
When I was a kid, I thought that the electrical stations on the side of the road looked like a playground (monkeybars, slides, etc). When I asked my mom if we could go there, she told me those weren't for kids, and that only adults were allowed. From that point on, I couldn't wait to grow up so I could play on the adults-only playground.
when I was little, my mom told me that those big round water towers were filled with alligators. for years, i pictured their insides with a giant alligator habitat in the bottom, with balconies above, men in white lab coats taking notes on clipboards. I finally got her to tell me the truth when i was about 12...
When I was little, Whenever we went to the mall, and went into one of the stores, I would stand up on the displays and stay very still, thinking I would blend in with the Mannequins!
I used to think that when you swimming 'Freestyle' was swimming any way you want.
When I was about 4 years I saw a water tower. I asked my parents how do you add water to it. Everyone was quiet for a moment. Then I said that you just take the roof off and add more water with giant pot.
When I would have my swimming lessons, I would belt it down the pool, not because I wanted to become an Olympic medallist, I didn't want the sharks, or worse, the whales, to eat me while I swam! I still swim pretty quickly in the deep end....

When I was little, my dad told me that if you pee in the pool the water will turn purple
My name is Adam and until recently at the age of 43 I believed that if you peed in a pool the water changed colour . Sadly I am still not convinced .... Am I thick ?
When I was a kid there was a bowling alley near where I lived that we went to somtimes until it was shut down. At the time I asked my dad why it was and he said something about how the owner found out his wife was cheating (on him) and so killed her and then himself. However I thought when he said cheating he meant cheating at Bowling and thought it was awfully harsh to kill someone for that!
I used to believe that it was illegal to leave a store without buying anything. Maybe I asked my mom if we could go to a certain store once and she said no because there wasn't anything we needed from there.

I thought the store Cost Plus was called that because everything cost more there and wondered why anyone would go there
I thought that the postman sits inside the postbox and waits with his letter bag and packed lunch waiting for enough letters to be posted through and when his bag got full he'd call the other postman to let him out and then they'd swap over.
For most of my childhood I thought the tiles on the grocery store floor were magic that only affected kids. There were big sections of white and big sections of pink, and I thought stepping on the white would make me weaker, and staying on the pink would keep me strong. Along the edge of shelves there was a strip of dark pink that I thought stepping on would keep me extra strong. Eventually it was replaced with a grey line that I thought stepping on would make me extra weak. I also thought the line was made grey just to make it more challenging for me because I was getting older and better at it.
