When I was young, I used to think that there were little men who lived in the traffic lights and had to manually change the lights so people knew when to go and stop. One little man would flip the green switch, one the yellow, and one the red!

I thought that when a club had sign out front saying, "no cover." that meant women didn't cover their chests. I was horrifed that one day I would have to go in a club and they would make me take my shirt off.
when I was 4, my friend had a pool in her backyard. one day I really wanted to go for a swim, so I asked her if we could swim in her pool. she replied that a monster lived in it and that if we went in it would drag us in and eat us. I stayed away from her pool from that day and was afraid of swimming for a while after that.
I was hanging out with a friend 1 day and i heard the ice cream van come round the corner. I had some cash and asked if she wanted an ice cream and she could pay me back later. My friend laughed and said the van music was on. Confused, my reply came as "so what?" in which my friend replied "well, when the musics on there isnt any ice cream left!" i then had to prove it and caused my friends mum a lot of hassle.
i used to believe the traffic reports i heard for the first year i lived in albuquerque were using "the big eye" adult store on the far edge of town as a traffic reference point, not the main intersection of interstates 10 & 25
My mother told me that when the icecream man played music that meant he was OUT of icecream.
Not mine, but did hear recently about someone being told as a kid that the ice-cream van only played its music when it had run out of ice-cream. Maybe its a Scottish thing!
one time when i was young my grandma took me shopping and we split the list. on my list was the letters T.P. i thought she was too emberassed to write out "Tam-Pons" so i went walking over to the isle that contained them. she asked what i was doing and i replied 'getting your 'tam-pons' gramma. she was throughly emberassed as was I when she corrected me and told the story to everyone in the family.
My brother convinced me that water towers were big aquariums.(we lived in Maryland so it was believeable). I could just imagine all of the fish swimming around in there. He said the only reason we had a water filter was to keep the fish from getting through! I always tried to take the filter off the faucet because i wanted an exotic pet fish. It wasn't until we moved to a house without a water filter that i realized fish weren't coming through the pipes. My brother also blamed clogs on the fish saying there were too many in the pipe at the same time.

When I was little I thought that the street lights went out after everyone went to bed.
when i was about two my mum said the ice cream vans only came on a sunday. So if i heard the music on another day my mum sayed it was naughty boys playing music and in winter she said the ice cream van only sold drinks. i believed this for about 4 years.
I used to believe that if you were going to eat at a restaurant, you HAD to dress up... otherwise, they wouldn't let you in! So everytime my mom would tell me we were going out for dinner, even to McDonald's or whatever, I'd go change into a fancy dress, and wear my "clicky things" (they were these elastic bands with bows on them that you put over your shoes, and every time you step, it makes a clicking sound...)
i used to believe that at the Denver, Colorado restraunt "Chubbys" you would go in, pick a food, and pay the chef to eat it to make him more chubby.
when i was like 7 or 8 i believed that in pools the filters on the side would suck you in and never let you go so i would always go under the water so i would get sucked in
To keep us out of the empty corn silos when we lived in the country, my Mom would tell us that if we stepped inside, the ground would fall away from us. I still feel strange if I go near an empty corn silo.
When I was little and my mother left me in the car while she ran into the shops I used to think that if I froze whenever someone walked past, they'd think I was some kind of statue and therefore would not kidnap me. I taught this to my little brother and sister who tested this idea out when they spilt a bottle of milk on the floor. My father walked in and they froze like statues, standing right next to the mess. My father (somehow saw them) punished them.

When I was little, I thought a sweater outlet was where you took your sweater to get " let out" after you grew out of it so it would fit.
I used to believe that when I swam in a swimming pool too long I would grow fins and be able to breathe underwater, like a mermaid, and still be able to survive out of water!!

I used to believe there was a man who sat in a room surrounded by light switches and when it got dark he would turn all of the street lights on one by one.

When my dad was a little kid he thought that there was a person in the basement that would stack the steps back up for the escalator.
