I never used to go near sewers because I thought they would suck you in. I thought they would even pull cars and schoolbuses in!

You know how crosswalks have those alternating white lines? Well, I used to believe that if you walked across it, and happened to touch a part that wasn't painted white, the road would fall apart.
I used to believe that the binoculars that you pay to release in theatre's to get a better view of the performance would self-destruct before the end of the performance
My Nan used to take us to a big theatre to watch a Christmas Panto every year. In front of every seat, there were Binoculars attached, and you had to pay to release them, to get a better view of the performance.
Before the very 1st performance began, my Nan caught me starng at people in the audience through these binoculars.
When asked what I was doing, I replied I'm getting my looks-worth before they blow up!
Little did I know that they weren't on a timer-device!

i used to think that i lived in the basement of my town. there was a hill that went so far down i thought it actually we went below the town to its basement.
I used to get scared when they announced the mall was closing that we wouldn't make it out on time. For whatever reason, I thought if you got caught there after closing you'd be turned into a mannequin.
When I saw signs saying "Public Footpath", "Public Swimming Pool" I thought that "Public" was the name of a private club that you had to join to use these facilities. I remember asking my parents if we were members.
I used to believe…
whenever my family would go to a pizza place or something that had video games in the back i would ask my parents if i could go play. they always said yes, but didn't give me any money. i actually believed i was playing the games until i was about 7!
I used to think that the store clerks knew everything, since they could always tell where a certain item was in a store. When I was reaching the 'curious' age, I asked a clerk was a penis was...naturally, all involved were embarrassed except for me. :) Now that I look back, I realize how stupid I was.
Until I was about 13 or so, my Dad had me convinced that he could magically sniff out McDonald's restaurants. He said their fries had a special smell that made it easy.

When i was little my mum told me that if an icecream van was playing its music it was going home and NOT selling icecream. I believed this till i was about 14
When I was young I couldn't get all the info about firefighters to fit together. I knew they slid down a pole to get out to the fire. I knew the firebox on the corner telephone pole summoned them to the fire. I could understand how they could slide down a small pole inside the big telephone pole and how they could get out.
I took my seven year old brother swimming - and thought I was being very funny by asking him if he knew what the 'no petting' sign meant. Quite cooly he said "yes, it means no shagging" Although he couldn't understand why I then started choking!
my mother and i used to walk to the store behind my house, across some sand dunes on the Navajo reserve, and i used to believe that the shadows cast by a streetlamp on the ripples of sand were holes and that I couldn't get across without her carrying me.
when i was 6 or 7, my sister's and i were swimming at our great aunt's house. (she's the same age as my mom, so we went to her house quite often and i trusted everything she ever said) well, she told us one day to be aware of the "trail" that you get when you're older. the "trail" was when you were on your period and you weren't wearing a pad. so at the young age of 12, when i first got my period, i told my mom that i didn't want to go swimming one afternoon b/c i was afraid of the "trail". i had to explain to my rather confused mother what that was and who i had learned it from, and she gave both my aunt and me a really hard time about it!

I believed that the Kreepy Crawlie used to clean our pool, would follow me around the pool and eat me.
Our family used to watch Dr Who every Saturday and the episode about the Green Death (the one which looked like slime and would crawl over you and make you glow in the dark and then kill you) affected me for many years.
It took me years (not kidding) before I could swim over a grate on the bottom of the swimming pool without having a panic attack bc that was where the green death came from.
Ironically, I became a collegiate swimmer so I guess I got over my grate phobia at some point.

I used to believe that if you touched the drain in a swimming pool it would suck you in and you would die. That is what I thought drowning meant.
'Black Friday', the traditional first shopping day of the christmas season in the US is so named, I now know, due to the fact that the immense revenues gained by stores therein, put them often 'in the black'. That is, operating at a profit. However when I was little I seriously used to believe that on Black Friday, only Black people were allowed out on the streets.
My dad told me that if I went into the pool just after eating that I would get Polio. We knew a old man that had Polio and he lost his legs ... needless to say I still wait 30 minutes after eating to go into the water.
