You know the stickers on mailboxes that say "Strictly no leaflets"? I used to believe that meant they didn't want little leaves in their yard, so I'd pick up a bunch off the footpath, and throw them over the fence, then walk off quickly!! I could also never work out why they didn't get rid of all the leaves already in their yard :-)

When I was a kid there was a Unisex hairdressers down the road and I used to wonder what a "Unisex" was. In the end I decided it was some sort of being, not male, not female, that had to go to a special place to get their haircut. One day I rode my bike past the window and peered in hoping to see one of these freaks. Instead I crashed my bike into the back of the hairdressers car and smashed her brake light: and while I lay sprawled on the ground all of the people from the hairdressers came out to pick me up and explain what Unisex actually meant.

When I was young, during the summer months, some time in the late afternoon, a melody would be heard and my parents would tell me that this was the bed time bell. My sister and I would duly go off to bed without question. It was a few years later when we discovered that it was the ice cream van which used to drive round the cul-de-sac behind the main road we lived on.

I used to think that between about 8 to about 5 in the afternoon, the streets and highways were completely empty because all the kids were at school and all the parents were at work. I always thought the world was split up into parents and kids, it never occured to me that the world is full of all kinds of people with different jobs and that traffic happens ALL the time almost every hour of the day!

When I was young I believed being the ice cream man would be lots of fun and you could eat as much ice cream as you wanted.
I am the ice cream man now and it is fun and I can eat as much ice cream as I want but...I have to pay for it!!!

I grew up pretty poor. My parents, having three young boys at once with a limited income could not afford luxuries. Well, ice cream was a luxury for us in those far gone days. The ice cream man would come along in his pedal cart bells a-ringing, and we would ask Dad to buy us ice cream. Dad told us that the guy with the cart was selling fish. We believed it until another kid that moved next door spilled the beans. Sidenote: Some would think Dad's lie was a bad thing to do to a kid, but I realize now that it was very clever. He didn't have to deny his kids something that he loves himself and we didn't have to go through the pain of the denial. I appreciate that story about him and it shows what a good guy he is.

My younger sister used to be obsessed with the 'land before time' videos and truely believed that the dinosaurs used to live in this 'valley' that we had to drive passed to get to my grandma's house.

I used to believe that if you went swimming in the pool of a cruise ship, you'd come back to the surface and end up in the middle of the ocean.

I had a sister 4 years older then me and one time on a walk, she had me convinced that if I didn't drink the gutter water, I would die. She 'helped me' drink it by using a discarded Dixi cup spoon.

I lived in Caerau(Ely)Cardiff until I was 7,but when I came of school age (5) the local catholic school was in North Ely(St Francis) which was a bit of a walk. This was the early 60's so my mother took me for the first few days & then it was deemed quite safe to go with the rest of the kids. There was a shop near my house called "The Hilldip".Anyway after school one day me & my friend, yes I'll name him Peter Cook, were walking home through a gully & I got bit by a dog,he told me(and we are both 47 now) that I would be dead by the time I reached "The Hilldip" I was 6 years old and I walked all around Ely that afternoon just to avoid that shop, just to stay alive,I live in another part of Cardiff now & so does Peter but the times I've driven past "The Hilldip" & shuddered,by the way Peter Cook still thinks its quite funny

We used to visit a shopping centre called 'Lion Yard' and perched on top of a big column was a statue of a large red lion. I was always afraid that the lion would come to life and jump down!

You know the vans with the ladders? I used to believe that you climbed those ladders to get to the swimming pool on top of the van! The weirdest part is, just a couple of years ago I met someone else who also had this belief as a child.

When I was young I used to believe that speed bumps were actually where they buried dead policemen. I guess I thought they wanted to continue serving their community post-mortem!

An older cousin told me that if you peed in the pool, the pee would solidify, drag you down and drown you. From that day on, I just kacked in the pool instead...

when I was very young, i was convinced that all my grandmother did between the times I saw her was stand at her dorr waving.. as it was the last thing she did when we left, and the first thing she did when we arrived. Sometimes i would not see her for weeks and worry that she must get exausted.
