I used to think "an armed person" meant a person without any arms. I grew up during the Vietnam War and so there was a lot of news about "armed camps." I imagined children with hooks standing around the campfire and playing games. (Naturally, crime reports on the news about "armed robbers" and gave me equally vivid mental pictures.

Up until a few years ago I thought that the SEAL in Navy SEALS was because they were trained to be vary agile in the water just like seals. Until later when I realized SEALs part was capitalized at it was an abrreviation for sea ,air, and land teams. Now I see , comically its a bit of both.

When I was a kid and my birthday was just around the corner, my mom told me that the hospital called and got my birth-year wrong, and that I was in fact a year younger than we thought. I cried for hours before I realized that she would know what year I was born, seeing as she was there.

When the deck in my backyard was being built, the name of the man who built it was Robert. This is also my middle name, so I assumed someone's middle name was always the name of the person who built their deck. It hadn't occurred to me that the rest of my family have different middle names, or that I was given my name (including my middle name) before the deck was built.

When I was little I thought I was the only one who grew. I used to tell my brother, who is two years older than me, that in two years I would be the same age as him.

I just got that Anon is short for anonymous. Like others I too thought there were a lot of people with the same name. Even after reading the title under common beliefs, I had to read other posts before I realized.

I used to believe that Will Smith's name wasn't Will Smith, but that it was World Smith.

When I was younger, my mum told me that because it was a leap year, I would miss my birthday and would have to stay the same age for another year. Even though my birthday is in September and nothing to do with leap years, I believed her and cried for ages.

my gram told me that if you could lick your elbow you would switch genders, if you were a girl you'd become a boy, and vice versa. i believed it for a good three years after that, and still check to make sure while looking like an idiot trying to lick my elbow.

When I was about 6, I had my little sister (age 3) convinced that a picture of a girl sitting in a field with a barn in the background was me before she was born and that we lived on that farm. I had her going for a few years before she realized it wasn't true.

When I was little my parents told me that the oil rigs off of the coast were pirate ships, and that they would come and take me away if I was bad. It frightened me so much, it even brought me to tears once.

I used to believe, thanks to my sister, that mannequins were once real people. She told me they were people that God had punished for being bad and they were 'frozen' forever.

When I was little, my dad told me that fish lived inside of my waterbed. I still remember trying so hard to see through the rubber lining so I could see the fish.

When I was four, my older brother told me that rolled hay bales were alligator houses, and I believed him until I was nine--I realized alligators don't live in Tennessee.
