When I was about 6 years old, where we lived I would often see a dark blue van and it had the word 'Strangers' on it in yellow. I used to think that the man driving it used to drive round and pick up strangers and put them in the back of his van to take them to the police station. I later found out that 'Strangers' was a building firm and was pronounced with a hard 'g' as in string.

My brother was born premature and was in an incubator for a little while. When I asked my dad why he was in a fish tank he told me it was because my brother was half fish and the doctors had to make sure his lungs worked well enough for him to live on land. I assume, or hope, that this was so I wouldn't be scared.

I only found out the truth when I told my mom how jealous I was that my brother could go swim with Ariel and the other mermaids and I couldn't.

I used to believe…

A friend once told me about a boy who had left his backpack unzipped once while it was on his back. Apparently, someone put a bomb in the backpack and the kid exploded. I was 65% sure this was not true, but I still to this day make sure my backpack is completely zipped up whenever I go anywhere.

When I was a child I used to think you only grew on your actual birthday. So on my birthday I would stare hours at the mirror. I guess it's because once I asked my mom when I would be bigger, and she probably said: "when you turn 5".

I used to believe…

Not my belief, but I heard a 3rd-grade student of mine earnestly explaining this to another today and just had to share it: If you are sick on your birthday, then you don't get one year older.

I used to believe that God's name was Howard. It wasn't until I was in Junior High that I realized that the prayer was "Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name" and not "Our Father who art in Heaven, Howard be thy name"

I used to believe…

This is my brother's belief and he won't admit to it. He was around 3 and wanted to know why there were books in the drawer in our hotel room. I told him it was placed there by the Gideons. Gideons were tiny people who came into the hotel rooms and put bibles in the drawers. About 5-6 years later, we were in the grocery store and he seen a Little Person (person of very short stature) and was he excited and pointed, "Look! A Gideon! There's a Gideon!". I fessed up the truth, after I stopped laughing.

I went to a Catholic grade school, and we had a dress code which included dark socks. I hated to wear wool because I itched so badly. My mentally ill neurotic mother, terrified that I would no doubt get severely sick otherwise, desperately wanted me to have warm feet, so she told me that dark socks had to be wool socks. I was 25, and hadnt gone near dark socks for years, when I found out the truth.

When i was very little, one of my preoccupation was looking at pictures in magazines (also finding the letter "z" in everything written). Somehow, i found many pictures that i strongly believed to be of my mom. I was very convinced it was her in those magazines. Later in my life i found out that my mom was not Elizabeth Taylor :))

I used to believe…

When I was three or so, my mother worked for a local radio station. She took me into work one day and I was playing with one of those wall-mounted, rotary pencil sharpeners. All I was doing was spinning the lever around. I must have been making an obnoxious noise, because one of the women who worked there came by and told me, "If you keep on doing that, McDonalds will explode."
I believed this up until my first day of kindergarten, when someone used the sharpener, I broke down crying, and made my mom take me to McDonalds after school to make sure that it was still there.

The kicker is that I didn't like McDonalds, even then.
