I used to believe…

When I was younger my brother told me his birthday was coming up, I told him that's not possible because he's younger than me and my birthday should be first. He looked at me like I was stupid and my mom explained. What's embaressing is that he's two years younger than me and knew before I did.

I used to think my mum and dad were brother and sister. How else would they have the same surname?

When I was little, I thought that my Aunts had two names. Their first name was "Annie" and then they had another name to differentiate them.

"Annie-Dolores" and "Annie-Darlene"

Later, I learned that "Annie" was a corruption of "Auntie" and at that time, I decided to keep calling them that, because I liked it.

I used to say " my birthday is before her's ( my cousin) but for some reason she is older than me' her bday is the 31st of july and mine is the 12th.

I believed that when you get older, you change names. That's prolly because in our language some names are now rarely used (I thought they're old man names, since I didn't know any kid with such name) and the currently common ones are "kid ones". For example, when Billy grows to John's age, he will be renamed to John and John will be renamed to something else. Since Billy sounds "childish".

My mom had a lot of wives tales or whatever you want to call them. Lies? ! She said if you had a headache it was because you were constipated. Years later I thought it was her little joke, because it mean your head was full of you-know-what. But a woman I just spoke to had migraine headaches as a child and her mother subjected her to enemas thinking to cure them!. So seems it was a common enough notion. Cats carried Tuberculosis, Milk gave dogs worms, Cutting the skin between thumb and forefinger gave you tetanus! She had a million of them!

When I was in junior high school, I used to tell a lot of lies to my parents, friends, teachers and after that I ended up believing all my lies, but now, I say the truth all the time.

Until last week, I thought that Anon was an actual person with WAY too much free time on his hands! I thought when the name was highlighted, I thought it meant that he had created a profile, so he could chat with people. Boy, was I ever wrong!

Ok when I was in Kidnergarten my mom wanted to get me to get my ears pierced and I was really excited about it! But a couple days before I was supposed to get my ears pierced a kid at school told me that when you got your ears pierced that blood squirted everywhere and that it hurt REALLY REALLY bad!! I was terrified!!! When I got home I told my mom I didn't want my ears pierced and why. She told me it didn't hurt but I told her, YEAH IT DOES!! I was convinced that if I got my ears pierced I would bleed to death!! I didn't stop believing that till I finally got my ears pierced when I was 11 years old!!

My grandfather had lost half of his right index finger in a work-related accident many years before I was born. When I was younger, he would tell me all sorts of stories about how he had lost his finger... but the common theme in his stories were that it was somehow my grandmother's fault.

She had chopped it off cutting veggies, she had sewn it off on the sewing machine, she had vacuumed it off while cleaning. But his favorite story, the one that kept me well away from my grandmother for a number of years, was that she had gotten mad at him for pointing at her, and bitten it off.

I was 9 before I learned the truth. In the interim, I would never point at ANYTHING in my grandmother's presence, nor would I give her hugs. I was determined that she wouldn't take a bite out of me.

I used to believe that all twins were identical. Its not that strange a belief, especially that I did find out a long time ago that there are also non-identical twins. But - I have aunts who are twins and I always just presumed they were identical, and then I met my fiancs aunts who are also twins and again I thought they were identical. About 2 weeks ago my sister told me that my aunts are not identical. I was so amazed and so mentioned it to my fianc and he then mentioned that his aunts are not identical! (He said did it not give it away they look nothing alike?!) Im now 27 so spent all those years believing my own aunts who look nothing alike were identical (and about 5 years thinking his aunts were identical)! It goes to show that those childhood beliefs dont really let go!

I thought that when you became an adult you had to change your name to a more adult sounding name. My dad's name is Leonard, and I couldn't see how any child could possibly have that name. I believed this probably until I actually asked my dad what his old name was. And then my brother Leonard Jr. was born.

Incidentally, the first time I was ever truly aware of the concept of a birth date was the year I was turning five. My birthday's on december 5th, so I assumed that next year it would be on december 6th to correspond to my age. I couldn't figure out what happened after age 31...

My family raised me to be religeous, so naturally I was taught that Jesus was born on December 25. I was born on christmas eve, and I always believed that Jesus was the only person born on 'christmas' and that was why I had been born on christmas eve. I thought it was impossible to be born on christmas because that was reserved for Jesus Only....

When I was a very little girl I wanted to be -- surprise -- a ballerina. My parents and I were at a Chinese restaurant one day and when the fortune cookies came my Mom took one for me and read me the fortune: You will grow up to be a ballerina.

20 years later it hit me, and I confronted my Mom about it. She remembered that day, too, and confessed she had made it up. Now when we're eating Chinese food I get to tease her about "the big lie" :)

My dad has a small white scar on his upper lip. When I was younger I used to think it was a white pencil line, which he applied every morning.

i believed that our neighbour's name was 'whatchamacallit' because my dad always referred to him so, forgetting his actual name.

you can imagine my confusion when he referred so someone else as 'whatchamacallit'.

I used to be convinced that, because my brother and I both have our birthday in August, all siblings were born in the same month.

I used to believe…

This is probably pretty common, but I used to believe that on your birthday you grew taller.
I remember when I turned five I tried to measure myself, because older kids looked bigger, so now I was five, I must be bigger. My dad laughed and told me it wasn't true and I got upset.
