My dad's name is Mark - and when I was 5, my best friend's dad's name was Mark. Seeing as how those were the only two dads I knew, I thought all dads were named Mark. When I started going to school, a classmate of mine mentioned his dad's name was Dennis. For the longest time, I felt bad that he didn't have a Mark!

Once, my Dad told me that you werent a year older untill you ate your birthday cake when I refused to eat it one year!
I am Caucasian, and when I was in kindergarten, I made my first African-American aquaintence, who happened to have the same name as me. We were the same age and size and found that we had similar interests and beleifs. This made me believe that there was an African-Amercian version of each Caucasian in the world.

When my sister was around 7 or 8 she was invited to a birthday party. The invitation stated "The fun begins at 5:30!"
On the day of the party, it was getting close to 5:30, and my sister complained to my dad, who was dropping her off at the party, "Daaaaad, it's 5:26, the fun's gonna begin in 4 minutes!!!" She believed that the fun literally started at exactly 5:30"

My mother didn't go with me on my first day of Kindergarten. The teacher kept asking me "Who are you?" and I would tell her "I am Julie's little sister. Don't you remember her? She was in your class last year."
The poor teacher was getting so frustrated. After half an hour of questioning me, she finally asked "What is your name?" She should have asked that first.

i used to think for some strange reason that people had really long noses like a sweeping brush handel and they were called nib nabs
I would run up to my parents with my shoes and ask "Which one goes on which foot?" They'd point to this one goes on this foot, that one goes on that foot. Then I'd hold up my socks and ask the same thing. Instead of saying that it didn't matter, they'd point to each sock and say this one goes on this foot... eventually I figured out how the shoes worked, but the logic behind the left vs. right sock eluded me for a very long time.

When I was little my father would always yell at my mother and tell her she was fat, and make her cry. He told her a fat wife was grounds for divorce. If we ever snacked or ate cookies, he would say "Be careful, you don't want to get fat".
Until I was in my 30's and looking at my friend's wedding albums, I honestly thought only thin people got married.

When I was about three and I was learning my colors, people would try to tell me that my sister's platinum hair was blonde. I would tell them "No it's not, it's white".

My mom led me to believe that when I was turning 10 that I could really be 16 if I wanted to skip 6 birthdays I was really angry with her when I found out it wasn't true.

My teenage babysitter, who was the superintendent's daughter in my building, always had a big chain hanging out of her back pocket (a keychain). I never knew what it was though, and I was afraid that if I touched it, an alarm would sound and her father, the superintendent, would come and arrest me or something (I thought being a superintendent made you a sort of king or something...)

my dad told me that when he was really young, he thought all women were called 'mommies' and all men were called 'daddies'
One day when my father was a very young child, back in the early sixties when the civil rights movement was in full force, he was riding the bus with his mother. It was already crowded when the driver stopped and picked up a black man who proceeded to take a seat right next to them. My dad then leaned over, looked the man straight in the eye, and said "Hi daddy!"
I can't even imagine what grandma's reaction was.

In our family, like many others I'm sure, we have little made up words for everyday things to make it easier for the toddlers as they learn to speak and for the adults to understand.
For example,
boo-boo = a hurt or a scare, be-bette = an insect, bankie = blankie
The one that really stands out though was 'na-na' which meant food. For a 6 year old, the most logical conclusion as to why we called my step-grandmother 'Nana' was because she was always eating. :-X
(I hope she never reads this)

when i was in first grade we had an african man come in to teach us how to play drums all my classmates who hadnt seen an african man before started saying that he was black, but i didnt understand that. i'd never heard the term black before and i stated very loudly 'he's not black! he's brown!'. i just didnt understand why pink people were called white and brown people were called brown. i still think its a dumb way of naming skin color.
