I was named Elizabeth, after my aunt. My family has always called me Beth, and she went by Betty. I always thought that when you were named Elizabeth, everyone called you Beth when you were little; and when you were an old lady, they called you Betty. I'm 32 now, and i'm still waiting for people to start calling me Betty.

When I was about 7 I would be reading books. A lot of them had the author's name as "Anon" and I thought, wow, this person really likes to write and gets published!
I read from this site often and until today I thought Anon was a person (I didn't know it really ment anonomous) and I was getting really annoied that they had so many and they all sounded fake! So I thought some kid named Anon was making up a bunch of beliefs and so i was so angry I would always skip over them!
I used to believe as of a couple moments ago that 'Anon' was an actual person. I didn't realize it stood for 'Anonymous'. Wow...

We were visiting my grandmother ( I must have been 6) and on the way into the house I found a puddle in her driveway that was filled with all these colorful oil swirls. I proceeded to swirl them around even more with my finger. I went in the house and washed my hands at my mother's insistence. As I was drying them off, My sister who was 2 years older came up behind me shaking her head but looking like it was a lost cause. You shouldn't have done that. You can't mix oil and water. Now your hand is going to catch on fire. So I waited in terror for the next couple of hours, watching and waiting for my hand to burst into flames!

We were watching a house fire on the news and I was about 4 or 5 and my older sister who would have been 7 or 8 told me that everyone's house would burn down at some point in their life. She also told me the same thing about accidentally stapling your finger like she did one day. I was terrified of the day that I'd have to feel that pain.

Up until recently I thought Dame Edna was really a woman - imagine my shock when I opened a magazine that had an interview with his wife!!
What's even more shocking is the fact that I'm 26!

This probably wasn't actually a belief, but what someone else wrote reminded me of this. When I was young, I watched a lot of Godzilla movies. And also, I apparently hadn't seen many Asian people in my life. So one day at the mall, as my mom tells it, we passed by some Asian people and I blurt out something to the effect of "Look! It's the people from the Godzilla movie."

This girl in my class, at finding out that I was turning six, told me that if I died when I was six, I would go to hell because six was the devil's number.
I convinced my sister one year we would skip her birthday. But then when she really believed me I some how convinced her that the next year she would have two birthdays.

Growing up as a kid in western Pennsyvania, I thought Steeler great Franco Harris was named "Frank O'Harris." He didn't look very Irish to me.
i had a firend in elementary school named April. One time she showed me a sparkly diamond (which I now know was fake) and said she had tunnels under her bed and in the tunnels were tons of diamonds. For a long time I wanted to go under her bed and look for diamonds. She never would let me. She also had many other stories that i believed.

When I Was in the thrid grade, There was a girl in my class known as "Sam", which I thought was a peculiar name for a girl, though I soon learned that it was a nkckname for "Samantha", a name I had not previously heard of. Also in my class was a girl named "Pam", whom I'd known since first grade. I decided that, since "Sam" was a nickname for "Samantha" (in the case of the new girl I'd met, at least, and presumably whenever a girl has the name "Sam"), "Pam" must be a nickname for "Pamantha". You should have seen the strange reactions the first time I referred to Pam as "Pamantha"!
I thought Anon was the admin of this site, and that's why he had so many posts and why his name was a hyperlink. But then I clicked on the hyperlink and it proved me twrong.

When I was little, my parents told me if someone had the same name as you they could be related to you, so till I was about 8, I would say to every Hannah I met, 'hey we might be related', until I realised my parents meant surnames...
