My mother wanted me to skip junior kindergarden so she lied about my birthday. My "school" birthday was in December and my real "secret" birthday was in February. I thought this was the coolest thing cuz I had to keep this big secret which made me kinda like a spy.

At first school, I envied anyone with what I saw as a cool name. Kimberly, Charmaine, Alexia, Nicola. But one girl had the coolest and quirkiest name of all. She was called Carilanne. We all wanted to be called Carilanne.

As a kid, I assumed that adults always told the truth. I thought lying was strictly a kid thing you eventually got too old to do anymore. I see now that this is not neccessarily correct.

My husband and I tell my four year old daughter that when she telling a fib her ears turn red. I can tell when she's lying anyways, so I always know when to say it. When I was a little girl, soda pop bottle tops had a cork insert. It was possible to pry this loose in one piece. One of my uncles showed me how you could sandwich your shirt between the bottle top and the cork, thereby attaching the bottle top to your clothing.
I thought this was the most elegant thing in the world. And I knew that it was my destiny to go on the stage wearing a costume made of nothing but soda-pop bottle tops. I knew I would be a star. Never stopped to think about what I'd need to perform; the bottle-top costume was more than enough.

When I was in second grade, my teacher was teaching us the months of the year by using the rhyme "30 days hath September, April, June, and November..." However, she kept saying "...MAY, June, and November..." My birthday happens to be May 31, and I spent several days believing that I had never been born.

When I would get a canker sore (a small painful ulcer in the mouth) as a child, my mom would tell that I got them because I told a lie. I would always go back and try to figure out what I lied about. Whenever I get a canker sore now, I think about what my mom always told me and smile!
