I remember probably the first time someone close in the family died, when I was about seven, I was confused about how they're laid out. I have a drawing I did of someone who died being on the cross like Jesus. I guess that's how I thought everyone who died was displayed. I was a weird (and religious) child.

At some point in my childhood, the subject of Henry VIII came up, along with the fact that he had some of his wives beheaded. I asked my mother why, and she said -- without providing any other context -- "Because he was Catholic". It's important to note here that my mother was not some kind of raving anti-Catholic bigot, she just somehow neglected to take into account that my brain at that stage of development was incapable of grasping the historical context of the Catholic church, its policies on divorce at the time, and all the other political factors involved. In any case, I subsequently spent a portion of my childhood believing that Catholics were horrible, scary people who cut their wives' heads off.

When I was little, I believed that when you died, you got to be a priest. The shock I got when I was an altar-server and found out the priests all lived!

One time when I was little, I accidentally let go of a balloon. I was crying and imagined the balloon up in balloon heaven crying for me too.

I never used to understand why people at church would talk about saving sinners, and being saved, because, for some reason, I was under the impression that people were bad because they wanted to go to hell, so they could do all the evil things they wanted. I didn't understand that there were other factors. That's probably why the whole "lead me not into temptation" thing didn't sense to. I thought people were evil because they liked to be evil

One time when I couldn't read very well and went by a church called "Church Of Christ" I thought it said church of thirst and I thought you could go there to get a drink if you were thisry!

When I was little I thought that at the end of a prayer my mom would say "And Jesus name my prayers" (She was actually saying "In Jesus name I pray") so I thought that Jesus gave each prayer a title when we finished. Every night I tried to say something extra interesting so he wouldn't have a hard time coming up with a good title.

My mother always told me that you had to be married to have children. So I just assumed that God and Mary were divorced; she had just left him for Joseph.

For the longest time I thought Catholic and Christian were the exact same thing.

I grew up southern Baptist and was somewhat astonished to learn that as a Baptist, I was also considered a Protestant. I had heard the word before, but got it confused with Presbyterian. Not being a Presbyterian I simply didn't think about it.

(I'm pagan now, btw, lol.) - Although I did make a point to go about my day wearing orange last St. Patrick's day... Yeah, I'm a dork.

Being raised Catholic, each Sunday consisted of us going to church. We would be at church kneeling when the priest would say the Eucharistic Prayer. When he would say, "... with the apostles, the martyrs, and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help"
I was so sure that he said, instead of "on whose constant intersession" he said "who, on Wisconsin Intersection."
I always thought it was so odd that the apostles, martyrs and ALL of the saints would be in an intersection, and try to figure out where exactly WAS Wisconsin Intersection. I presumed it was quite holy. Still to this day, I pretend to hear Wisconsin Intersection instead of the actual prayer!

In the first verse of the Harvest Festival hymn "Come ye thankful people, come" there is a line that reads "All be safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin". For a long time I thought that meant "Everyone be safely gathered indoors, before the winter storms begin". Only recently did I find out that it refers to crops, rather than to people!

When I was a kid, my mom told me that us Christians relive Easter every year, and I took it very literally. I thought that Jesus was recrucified every year, and I silently wondered why nobody tried to save him.

When I was little we lived in a little house with a big backyard. When the minister at our church told us that Jesus was always with me, I figured that if He lived in our house I'd have seen Him, so He must live in our backyard. There was one corner where we were all afraid to go (even the dog) because there was a wasp's nest, so I decided that that must be where Jesus lived, since even wasps wouldn't sting Jesus. I believed this for years.

When I was young I used to think that there was a big man who lived in the sky listening to my most personal thoughts and feelings, who cared deeply about my hopes and fears, and who would listen to my requests, granting only those which were good for me.

When I was little, I thought the lyrics for silent night. "so tender and mild" was referring to baby Jesus like he was a piece of meat. I was really confused as to why they were going to eat Jesus.
