I used to believe it was the father, the SUN, and the holy spirit. I had no idea why we'd be praying to the sun since it was just...well I didn't exactly know what the sun was then either but I knew it had nothing to do with Catholicism...I was very confused for a while . . . up into the 7th grade actually . . . I'm slow, I admit it . . .

I used to believe until about the age of of 9 or so that the angels were actually singing in church. I was SO disappointed when I turned around one day and saw the choir! To tell the truth, I am still disappointed to this day!

I used to believe that I had a certain amount of luck to last for my whole life, so I used to pray to the spirits to make small unlucky things that I didn't really care about too much happen - so I could save my luck for when I really needed it.

I used to pray everynight before I went to bed, and I had 2 nearly OCD-like things I needed to do in my prayers. First, I had to ask God to bless a very specific list of people I knew in a specific order.

Secondly, I believed that prayer was a direct conversation with God himself, so I was very careful to let him know that my prayer was over, often for several minutes after saying "Amen." I thought that if I didn't do this and accidentally said a bad word or did something bad, God would know immediately, and would be angry with me.

Hmm... may be why I'm a lapsed-Christian today...

My husband used to think there was a gospel song called, "Bringing in the sheep" or "Bringing in the sheets". I set him straight after I stopped laughing.

I was told that if your ever swore in church, as you walked out God would strike you with a bolt of lightning.

When I was very little I thought that god was a really tall skinny guy with long hair and a beard. I visualised him running long-legged through the city with tall buildings in each hand placing them in empty lots, because I had been told that god created everything and put everything in its place.

Early literacy can be a mixed blessing - being able to read I missed out on the dancing furniture, the unbuilt arks and even the happy salad (Lettuce with a gladsome mind), but I read and re-read the verse of "Just for Today" which goes "Let me no wrong or idle word unthinking say (that bit was fine), set thou a seal upon my lips, just for today". Okay, God can do everything, so the general idea wasn't too much of a problem - it was the details ... like, would the seal be balancing a beach ball on its nose? How big would it be? Would I be able to breathe? ...

The hymn "Gentle Jesus meek and mild" contains the line - "Pity my simplicity". For years I thought this was "Pity mice in Plicity" and wondered where this awful place called Plicity was where mice were so persecuted.

When I was little we had neighbours who had three children - Eva, Lila and Jackie. When I was reciting the Lord's prayer at bedtime I always asked God to deliver us from Eva, Lila and Jackie

I used to believe that Mother Nature was The wife of God. She was the mommy and he was the daddy.

I used to believe that God looked like Abraham Lincoln, only made out of clouds, and he would sit at a big cloud desk and do business type things...angels on different clouds would call him on his cloud phone and prayers were recorded on his cloud answering machine...

When I was young, I believed that God had written the Bible. I couldn't read at the time, so I thought that the Bible had the answer to every qestion in the world. Absolutely every one. Needless to say, I was horribly dissappointed when I learned how to read. It seemed to be entirely compromised of Somebody, who begat Someone Else, who begat Yet Another Someone....

I wasn't helped by attending the funeral of a wealthy man who had chosen "Guide me, O thou great Redeemer." The order of service contained a misprint (accidental or otherwise) which replaced "Land me safe on Canaan's side" with "Land my safe on Canaan's side."
