As a little girl I was brought up quite religious even to the point that in the month of October we all had to say the rosary every night, no matter what, but one night I was just too tired so I tried to sneak into bed when my mum shouted (get out of bed this minute and say your prayers even a cow gets down on its knees before sleeping).

At infant school we said a prayer at the end of each day -
Hands together softly so
Little eyes shut tight
Father just before we go
Hear our prayer tonight.
And I used to say 'mother' instead of father because she was the one waiting for me at the gate not my 'dad'!

I used to believe that the ringing of the bells in the Catholic church service were to wake people up.
It seemed very plausible to me. I was bored stiff.

When I was about 5 years old I used to believe that the voice of the woman that sings hymns in church was the voice of Virgin Mary(maybe because the singing group wasn't that visible and I was tiny)

I used to believe that when animals died they became camels in heaven. I think it came from all the sunday school lessons with the stick-on felt picture boards where they always had camels in the background.

When I was in year 1 at primary school (aged 5) we had to go to assembly with the whole school, but weren't given hymnbooks to help us sing the songs as most of couldn't read well enough yet. As a result, for years I sang "Dance, dance, wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance settee". I assumed a "dance settee" was a place where you could be really comfortable, warm, etc, and were allowed to jump on the furniture!
I used to believe…
We have a very large church and the Priest speaks into a mic
to be heard by everyone. When I was very young, and too small
to see the priest up on the alter, I thought it was God talking at
mass. It only made sense. He would talk and people would say
"Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ".
I was with my mother in the early sixties, and we saw two nuns walking on the sidewalk. These were the first nuns I'd seen in real life, and I was very excited. My mother explained to me that," You always see them in pairs. This is because they're afraid if one goes out alone, she'll surely run away."

I used to believe that the words of the carol Come all ye faithful were "Come Molly faithful" and always wondered who Molly Faithful was.

The church in my hometown had a golden ball ontop of its tower. I believed that there was a huge treasure hidden inside the ball. And I would think of ways to reach the tower to get to the treasure.

I used to believe that everything you said in your lifetime was recorded in heaven and used against you at the Pearly Gates.

This is really my elderly friend's recollection.
Her family bred Siamese cats, which were of course good mousers. When the little girl learned to sing, "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild" she thought the 3rd line went, "Pity mice implicitly" instead of the actual "Pity my simplicity"! (You must remember that children's spoken vocabulary was much more sophisticated in those days!)

I don't know why but when i was 5 i used to think the place where you kneel to pray was were kids sat.

In grade five I believed that 'virgin' was synonomous with 'a kind person', like the Virgin Mary. I couldn't understand the shrieks of my classmates when I exclaimed in an argument that I wasn't *always* a virgin!
I used to believe…
When I was very little I used to believe that if I stood by the statues in the church they would come alive and give me a piece of coltsfoot rock. I Still have no idea where this came from but I remember feeling annoyed when I never got any rock.

When I was a little girl, we used to watch "Little House on the Prairie" as a family. I often heard the hymn, "Bringing in the Sheaves" on the program...but what I heard was "Bringing in the Cheese"! I always pictured people walking down the aisle, carrying plates of cheese!

When I was about 8, our family were burying a much loved pet hamster in a small grave dug in the front garden. My Dad said thanks to God for poor departed Susie's life and we had a little prayer service. At the end of this service, my Dad placed the hamster into the grave with the words,
In the name of the Father
And of the Son
And into the hole you go
Amen
