When I was very small the Catholic Church used the old LAtin liturgy, and the priest celebrated mass with his back to the congregation. During the consecration, a lot happened. The priest washed his hands, poured some water into a chalice, then he would make the sign of the cross over the chalice, which seemed a sort of stirring motion when seen from behind. A few moments later he opened the tabernacle, and took out a chalice full of already consecrated hosts. Naturally, I thought the tabernacle was a small oven, and the priest had stirred up a batch of communion wafers and baked them on the spot.

As A Child: I used to believe I had to get my nightly prayers exactly right or God would not accept them so I would sometimes stay up a very long time in bed repeating my prayers over and over just to get it exactly right

I used to wonder what the nuns' husbands thought of their poor fashion sense...we had Franciscan nuns at my church when I was a little girl.

i was an Indian on an assignement to Minnesota - residing at Ramsgate Apartments. when another friend joined me, i told her that this place was named after the Lord Ram, an Hero in the Indian Epic Ramayanam. She beleived it for quiet a while and conveyed the same to her parents back home.

Not me, but my best mate used to be in the school choir, who every Easter used to do a concert which included Handel's Messiah. Instead of "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth", my mate thought for years that it was "the Lord God on impotence reigneth".

When I was little I used to go to church, after listening them going on about the devil one day I begna to wonder where he was. I imagained that he was in some foreign country somewhere (!) I asked my Dad and he said he didn't know, and that he could be anywhere! This freaked my out I was only little, I made me a bit paranoid, I thought I was going to bump into a demon with a forked tail in the street.
Perhaps this has something to do with me not being a christian anymore...?

I used to believe…

You know how the sun is shining on one part of the world and that it's night on the other side? I believed that God always watched the side of the world where it was daytime. There was no need to watch the part of the world where it was night, because everyone was sound asleep in their homes. :-)

that the money I gave at sunday school would go straight to God.

I used to believe that God lived in the men's room of my childhood church. This was mainly due to my Sunday School teacher telling our class that he lived at our church, and my not being able to find him in any other room. The only room I couldn't enter was the men's room, so I assumed that because I didn't see him anywhere else, that's where he must live. I think I was 6.

a friend's aunt was quite unsure why during the holy mass she had to sing a song about a cross-eyed bear called gladly. years later she found out that she was supposed to be ready to support jesus by confirming "gladly, the cross i'd bear"

When she was a kid, my mother hated the carol "Good King Wenceslas" because she thought the line "Thou and I shall see him dine" was really "Thou and I shall see him dying".

I used to believe…

When I first went to Sunday School I was frightened and cried. There were some glass globes full of water and bubbles sometimes could be seen. They were only drinking water dispensors, but I thought it was Holy Water and the bubbles were the Holy Ghost.

My mother told me once that it was a mortal sin to sing Christmas carols if it wasn't Christmas. (I think she was just tired of listening to them.) Even though I loved Christmas carols I was deathly afraid to sing any before November 1 or after Christmas, or else I would go to hell when I died.

I used to believe that Jesus was crucified in Pantasaph near my home town in North Wales. I was always fascinated by his ability to talk in tongues as that was obviously why no-one referred directly to him speaking Welsh.

When I was a young Catholic - pre-Vatican Two - and Mass was in Latin, I thought that the frequent prayer Dominus Vobiscum - Et cum spiritu tuo (The Lord be with you ...) was the football results.

Brought up as a Catholic, I was taught to take care of my soul so that I would be entitled to get into heaven in due course. I used to believe that my soul was a weetabix-shaped organ in the middle of my body. Well, not just weetabix-shaped. When I imagined it, it looked exactly like a real weetabix.

When I was a child, about 6 years old, I went to Sunday School each and every Sunday. It was Christmastime and that meant recreating the manger scene of Christ's birth. The teacher went around the classroom, recruiting volunteers for parts in the scene. "Who would like to be a shepard?" I immediately raised my hand. "OK, c'mon up...." I ran up with joy and took my place on the scene. I went up and laid down on the floor and curled up. The class, including the teacher, roared. I thought I was playing the part of a shepard ~ a German Shepard dog!

"Our father, who art in heaven. Howard be thy name."

I still say "Thank You Howard" when I feel blessed.
