I grew up in Louisiana...my family watched the NO Saints on TV all the time...and they would play segments of "When the Saints go marching in" when the team took the field.
and then on Sundays we'd sing the same song in church...I could never figure out why they sang about the NO Saints in church.

(now I know it couldn't have hurt...they needed all the help they could get!)

My six year-old cousin thought that virgins were people who went to Church, and went around declaring that she wasn't a virgin.

I used to believe that the song "Amazing Grace" was about an old, blind bag lady who begged for money on the streets. One day, she had enough money for eye surgery.

Thus - she was once blind, but now could see.

Someone told me that was the meaning of the song.

Attending a religious school as a young child it was part of the day to read the life of a saint. Their heoric deeds were so far beyond anything I could imagine at a very young age, I made up my mind that even if I were the best possible behaved person all I could ever wind up being was an angel.

We were taught by nuns who were huge towering figures in long black robes and high headpieces covering all trace of any hair. Only their oval faces were visible from this all encompassing habit, and hands. Occasionally an orthpedic black oxford shoe would peek out from the hem of the voluminous garment. It took a very long time before I understood that there were people under the robes, and what's more they were women. In my mind they were a separate species, born to be nuns and nothing else.

When I was a little girl I heard my Grandfather saying grace. Somehow I got the notion that if you didn't pray "out loud" the devil would steal your prayers!

Calling the bible "The Book" and "The Word" and "The Good News" had me mixed up for years. We even had one called "The Living Bible". I thought my family was special cause we had the one that was alive! I was really disappointed when I saw this one in a book shop at some point.

My father was a minister so I went to church regularly and even as a small child knew the words to almost all the hymns. When we visited my grandmother where my youngest aunt was still living at home she and I used to sit in the porch swing and take turns choosing hymns to sing. One of her favorites was "At the Cross" but one day when she chose it I informed her that my Mom didn't allow me to sing about worms. Remember the original version; "...for such a worm as I?" Now we sing "...for sinners such as I."

Up until I was 7 years old, I believed that there were big beakers of orange juice on the altar in church. That was because the big candles in those glass enclosures were colored (for some reason) orange. I kept asking my dad what the orange juice was doing there and he thought I was nuts.

Since Im getting next to nothing done today, what with party planning and poop jokes and all;

I used to believe that the Angel of the Lords name was Lo because Linus said something about And Lo, the Angel of the Lord came down from heaven. in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

My little sister and I used to share a bedroom when we were small. We
believed that our "guardian angels" were always standing beside our beds
at night. It then occured to us that they might get tired so for the next while
we only slept on half of the bed in case they wanted to go to sleep too!

I used to believe that heaven was a place where we could float about. There would be many large tables floating about piled high with ice cream. Somehow in heaven there were only children

I used to believe that God was the Incredible Hulk - he was green and muscly and had purple trousers.

I thought God looked like a cartoon baby with a magic wand he would use to perform his "tricks." I can still see that image. I also thought I didn't want to stay *anywhere* for eternity, including heaven. It would be so boring!

I used to believe God's first name was actually Peter, and he was just a normal guy really although everyone pretended otherwise. They would accidently let it slip in the last sentence of mass, when everyone was eager to get home: "Thanks Peter God"

Although my family wasn't Catholic and I didn't even know any Catholics, I did know who the Pope was. When I couldn't figure out why Easter was on a different date every year, I assumed the Pope decided every year when Easter would be celebrated.

My friend used to believe that Adam and Eve were buried under her church's library! She was so scared of it afterwards, even when another friend told her that it was a big April Fool's joke.
