I used to believe that if I didn't pray to God every night, and specifically ask that the house not get burned down, that it would catch fire in the night.

I used to believe…

Up until I was nearly a teenager I believed that the Christmas carol "Silent Night" ended in "sleep in heavenly peas" and could not figure out why in the world ANYONE would want to lay in a bed of peas. I actually imagined a lady and a baby laying in a huge waterbed type piece of furniture filled with peas.

Also when I was younger I believed the song "Secret Agent Man" was really "Secret Asian Man" That one was pretty confusing too. But my dad thought it was pretty funny.

My parents were very religious and when I was young would travel all over Texas to religious conventions. One year at a convention there was a reenactment of Jesus' baptism and crucifixion. I was horrified that no one was helping Jesus, and even more horrified when I surmised that WE were the evil Romans who were killing Jesus. I cried but never said anything to anyone because there was so many people there I thought they would kill me too. Years later I realized it was just a play when I learned that Jerusalem was nowhere near San Antonio..

When I was little, I used to believe that Jesus died every year for 3 days from Good Friday until Easter. I was always scared for those 3 days being without Jesus, but always felt better on Easter, because then I knew he would rise again.

They showed a lot of rapture movies at my church when I was in high-school. For a couple of years I was really disappointed because I was totally and completely convinced that we were going to be raptured before I would have a chance to get married and have a family.

Whenever we sang the song "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us", I thought we where singing about Shirley Goodness, and I thought she would be a lot like Shirley Temple.

When I was six, I used to think the song "Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly" went "Deck the Halls with Boston Charlie." I still sorta sing it that way to myself, 30 years later!

One of my favorite Christmas carols was "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen". There's the line in there that says "and save us all from Satan's powers." I thought it was "and save us all from saltine crackers." I never questioned why saltines were so evil.

I used to believe that if you prayed for forgiveness for your sins, you would be "saved" and that made you a born again Christian, the only souls allowed into Heaven. And that all Buddists, Muslams, Catholics, and all peoles of the earth, except the born again Pentecostal Christians, would burn in hell for eternity.

I used to believe…

When my sister and I were children you went to Catholic church with this little doiley thing on your head. I had very thin straight hair any my bobbypins would fall out. My sister told me that it was a sin not to wear it so I had to manage to keep it on. One windy day I was entering the church when a gust of wind blew my "doiley" off my head. My grandmother and sister were a few steps ahead of me and I hollered, at the top of my lungs to them, into a big, old echoey church, "I can't go in there Nana or I'm going straight to hell!" Needless to say the congregation got quite a kick out it. The priest did explain to me later that that was simply not true. I'm not Catholic anymore.

Growing up Catholic, I though the entire world was Catholic. I didn't realize there were other denominations til I was 12 and a Lutheran friend of mine was getting confirmed. I said I'd help her study and then found out they don't pray to Mary! The shock and horror and fear!
