I used to believe…

As a small child (four or five?), I read the Bible story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the burning fiery furnace. This scared holy hell out of me because I absolutely believed that if I did something bad my parents would throw me into our furnace at home. I remember waking up at night crying about this and completely befuddling my poor folks.

aAt school we had to learn all the hymns by ear and in "All things bright and beautiful" I used to sing "How great is God or Mitty"!!!!

I used to believe the saying "thanks be to God" went "thanks, Peter God" - as if Peter was his first name :-)

I once believed that the priest at the small country catholic church in Australia was calling apon some magical thing during the consecration of the host. Every time he said "let us pray" I thought he was calling apon "Alice spray". I had no idea who Alice was, nor why her spray might be so good, but sure hoped to have some one day.

When I was very small - four or five, I guess - I recall walking down my street after a rainstorm. As the storm moved away and the heavy black clouds began to scatter, the most beautiful piercing rays of sun reached toward earth and I remember thinking, "That's God." It was the most comforting and beautiful thought, and to this day it makes me smile.

I used to think that if you were mean, after you die, you go to hell where Satan makes you slide down giant razor blades before you go into the pool of fire. Ha

My wife used to "flip off" the devil by walking around with her middle fingers pointed towards the ground. She thought that would keep him in hell.

I remember making "crafts" (coloring paper plates) when I was around six or seven, and telling my grandmother I wanted to sell them. She was helping me figure out how much I should charge for them, and asked me if I wanted to make a profit. This greatly alarmed me, and I shreiked in reply, "No! I don't want to be a prophet like Elijah!" Apparantly we must have been talking about prophets in Sunday school...

I thought that Samson and Solomon from the Bible were the same person for the longest time...

I used to believe…

As a child aged 4, a younger sibling died. It was my impression that his body would be placed atop a palm tree where messengers from heaven would retrieve this returning "angel". As an adult I learned of similar beliefs by the American Indians; at least in the manner they placed their departed atop high trees, mountains, etc.

I used to believe…

When we went to confession we were supposed to say the Act of
Contrition, which began with the words, "Oh my God, I'm heartily
sorry for having offended thee." I thought the words were "hardly sorry"
and I didn't understand why I had to confess if I was hardly sorry. (And I
usually WASN'T sorry!)

I used to believe…

My mum thought the Lord's prayer started:

'Our father, Whitchett, in Heaven...'

Thinking it was his postal address?!

I used to believe…

"God be with you 'til we meet again, with his sheets securely fold you....." That's what I sang until I graduated to senior choir, which marked the demise of my belief in a heaven fitted with carved cedar doors where all slept safe, tucked into fresh, white sheets.

I used to believe that if you look into the center of a fire hard enough, you could see hell.

I used to believe…

'God is always watching' my mother would tell me endlessly as a child. I always wondered how many televisions god would watch simultaneously and did he ever get bored simply watching me washing my teeth, so I would dance around to entertain him so he wouldn't get bored.

i went to a catholic school in grade school. our church used to be between our house and my school so i used to pass by the church almost every day. one of the reasons why i loved passing by the church then was because the holy water smelled so sweet and flowery to me, i used to think it was really made that way. i would drop my rosary and my veil in it, and my hankies so i could take the scent home with me. after many years, one day i noticed it did not have the scent anymore and i told my mom.."why don't they put perfume in the holy water anymore?"..it was only then when my mother said "they never used to.." that i realized that i was the only one smelling the scent. i felt sad and happy at the sametime ..sad for losing it, and happy that i was given that small miracle while i was growing up.

I used to sing 'I am the Lord of the done seatee' insted of 'I am the lord of the dance said he.'

Because we never had hym books or an overhead projector in infant school, so you had to sort of guess what others were singing!

I used o belive that if you prayed, with a finger up, not folding, you wouldnt bring that finger with you to heaven
