When I was young I used to believe that there was an all knowing all seeing being. who created me and everyone else. This being also watched everything that went on and felt that he should tell everyone what to do.

When I was really little my mother told me that Jesus was in everything. Of course, I interpreted that as meaning that he made up the mass of all things, such as the inside of the walls, and that's how he knew everything a person was doing and whether they were sinning. When I was about 7 or 8, I cut my arm on a rock, and a layer of my skin was coming off. I was really scared because I was unaware that people had "layers" of skin, and I convinced myself that I had found Jesus. I tried to peel of the rest of my skin so I could meet Him, and apologize for all my sins and that he had to live inside of me, but it was too painful and I gave up. Then I started to cry because I was worried Jesus would be mad at me because I couldn't free him from my skin.

I always thought that heaven was in the sky, so whenever I go on an airplane, I always try looking for God. I kept yelling, "God! Are you there?!" But then I went to religion school, and I found out that you need to be dead to see God. Well, I didn't let myself die!

I used to believe…

This is actually one of my earlier memories so it's a little hazy but parts of it are still quite vivid.
I remember being in Sunday School and this woman whose child care certificate must have been made of construction paper and glitter, was speaking to the congregation of youngsters about the difference between Heaven and Hell.
I have from as far back as I can remember struggled with the concept of living forever.(Either way I look at it living for an eternity in either case is Hell in itself.)
This woman had me believing that when you die and go to heaven (because we were all good little girls and boys.) you eternally sit on a fence and listen to angels sing.
Right then and there I decided that Christianity wasn't for me, her story sent me into my earliest memory of an anxiety attack and I bolted for the exit as soon as I saw an opportunity.
This is where things get hazy, I remember construction workers and a bunch of adults I didn't recognize. I was found and my parents promptly took me home.
I must have been at least 2, but it's hard to know for sure.

When I was a little girl, i recall going to my Catholic church. If, you're not familiar with it, before given communion we would shake hands with the people around us and say "Peace be with you". I always thought they were saying "Peace baby Jew" which also made sense since Jesus is Jewish.

I used to believe…

When I was young I used to believe that there was a huge, white bearded god in the sky who saw everything I did and judged me on my behavior. If I was bad he would torture me forever and if I was good I would be sitting in church singing forever. I wanted to be his best friend.

When I first heard the 23rd Psalm, with its opening line, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want", I was not previously familiar with the word "want" with no specified direct object. Nor did I understand all types and uses of punctuation. So the only way I could figure to interpret that line was as if it had an implied "whom", so that it would mean "The Lord is my shepherd whom I shall not want." I puzzled long and hard over why a Bible verse would have us saying we shall not want the Lord as a shepherd.

Because I was told that God was everywhere and watches you all the time, I felt uncomfortable going to the washroom. Sometimes Id even say out loud, Dont look at me now!

I used to believe…

At church, one line in a prayer was forgive us our sins, but I thought we were all saying give us your cents. And then I would say/think, but thats all I have! I dont want to give my cents away! lol

When I was little, I heard people mention asking God a question after they died and decided I had alot of questions, and worried incessantly about forgetting them when I woke up. Thus I determined I wanted to be buried with a piece of paper with my questions written on it. Then I just worried about forgetting about the paper, but figured with all eternity to go through, I'd eventually stick my hand in my pocket and wonder what it was.

When I was young, the woman teaching us in church would tell us to let Jesus into our hearts. I was completely confused by this, wondering how Jesus could come into ALL of our hearts, because he was only one person. Then I came up with the strange idea that he'd place each one of his body parts into our hearts so that he'd be with everyone. As I got older I became more aware of spirituality and figured out I was wrong.
