I used to believe…

As a child I always made sure to say my prayers every night. I would especially ask God to forgive me for any lies I may have told. You see my Mom would tell me that the devil would come and pull my tounge out of my mouth at night while I slept if I told lies. As I was going to bed each night I always pictured this happening and never forgot to ask for God's forgivness and protection.This may sound harsh on my Mother's part, but it also made me detest lying and therfore made me a very honest person...one of my best qualities!!

wgen I was in kindergarten catholic school I haf just learned about ccd. it was like a thing where you go once a week to learn about god. before I started it me and my friends thought that ccd was this evil group of kids who would come into the school at night and ruin it. because our desks had been drawn on. when my mom told me I was going to start ccd i cried. it waas so funny

When I was a kid, I had this statue of Abraham Lincoln posed like the Lincoln Memorial on my nightstand. In my mind, that was what God looked like. I mean, we had pictures of what Jesus was supposed to look like, and a Dove was the Holy Spirit. But no one ever said was "God the Father" looked like.

So in my mind, God looked like Abe Lincoln!

I used to believe that the transformers on the top of telephone poles were actually all individual heavens were people went when they died. Dont ask me why i beleive this, perhaps because heaven was in the sky and they looked like little boxes way up high were people might live. I thought everyone got one of those and it was heaven inside.

When I first heard of the Pope I misheard it as The Poke, apparently he was above even Kings. That fitted because he had a taller crown than was ever seen on a King.
He was called the Poke because he carried this big staff thing and if anyone, even our King, contradicted him he'd poke them in the eye with it.

As a Catholic, I heard a lot about this "virgin" Mary. Not knowing what the word virgin actually meant, I assumed it referred to sainthood. When I was around 7-8, I went around telling everyone that I really wished I was a virgin, but that it was too hard and I wasn't disciplined enough.
I never understood why they looked so shocked.

When I was younger I believed the reason I never got caught doing naughty things at school was because I said my Our Father everynight. I thought the line that went "and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" actually went "and lead us not into DETENTION, but deliver us from evil". it certainly made sense to me.

I am a Catholic, and as a child I naturally got some words confused as many other people here did. At one point the church says "I am not worthy Lord, but only say the word and I shall be healed", I believed it went "only say the word and I shall be YOU" (our priest has a bit of an accent). I thought that being God would be a terrifying duty, having to take care of everyone in the world at once, and that we should scared of taking on such as task. I always said this line a little smugly however, knowing that if God ever asked me to take his place i would take on the responsibility full throttle.

I used to help out in a 2nd grade Hebrew class that was way out of control. The teacher asked the class if anyone knew when we celebrated Shabbat and one of the boys raised his hand and said "December."

My Mum tells me that when she was a child she used to think the words of the Lord's Prayer were "Our Father, we chant in heaven". She thought, we chant in church so we must surely also chant in heaven.

Being a sheltered little kid, I had no idea what a virgin was, until I figured it out looking at a book of Christmas carols. The illustration for 'Silent Night' had Mary sitting on the ground, leaning against a boulder holding her baby. I took 'round yon virgin mother and child' as 'round yon virgin, mother and child.' I thought virgin was another word for boulder.

I used to believe that if you went high enough you could walk on the clouds and there would be angels and castles and dead people so you could visit heaven anytime. Of course, I didn't know that you could actually get as high as the clouds in an airplane.

One of the hymns we used to sing at church said, "fill the heavens with sweet accord, holy, holy, holy lord." When I was little I didn't know what "accord" was, and this led to some wierd associations in my mind. I knew that the type of jelly my family used in sandwiches was Concord, and that was the only other word I knew that sounded at all similar, so I figured that maybe this was just another way to pronouce it. It made sense to me, so I went along for years believing this hymn wanted God to fill Heaven with grape jelly.

When i was little, at church they always used to tell us that Jesus was in our heart.
So when my friend's granddad had a heart operation I asked him if they found Jesus.
I'd always imagined a little mini Jesus running around in my heart.

Raised to believe that Jesus was coming back to take Christians away, and having seen some old religious movie where all the Christians disappear and and the anti-Christ or whoever is trying to kill this lady who is left, I would always freak out if my parents were late coming back home and the sky was really weird looking outside. Or, sometimes, if they didn't wake up the usual time, and everything was quiet, and it looked weird outside, I thought they had been taken. I would cry in my bed thinking that I was going to hell and the anti-Christ was coming to get me.

Handel's "Messiah" includes "For we, like sheep, have gone astray". But Handel, a German, was a bit rough on his english phrasing, so the main line comes out as "For we LIKE sheep", which puzzled our Sunday School choir - we had nothing against sheep mind you, but few Australians would choose them as special mates. A couple of us decided on our own slant, incurring strife for singing, "For we like sheep, but I prefer dogs -..... etc". "But Sir, we were in tune and everything!"

In the song Silent night theres the part that says

"round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild"

up until 2 years ago I thought it was " Holy imbecile tender and wild"

if thats not bad enough i also went to a catholic school
