When I was young, I used to believe that when you died, your spirit crawled out your mouth and ran away to an unborn baby.
I believed that "Our Father, who art in heaven" was about my own father, who had died when I was 2. I never realised the reference was to God until I was about 10

When I was younger, I didn't understand the words to many of the hymns we sang in church, but there was one that just couldn't be mistaken. When this particular hymn was sung, I would stand, and proudly, whole-heartedly, and in my best, loudest voice sing...."Bringing in the sheep, bringing in the sheep; we will come rejoicing, bringing in the sheeeeeeep."

Once when I was little, my mother, who was raised religiously, was driving with me in the backseat. It was sunset, and she had just recently decided to try and implement religion into my life. So she's driving and she says, "Wow, look at the beautful sky God has given us to enjoy today". Without skipping a beat, I replied "Did she paint it with crayons?"
To this day, I believe God must be a woman, and that experience was also the end of organized religion in my life.

When I was a little girl my mother told me not to whistle because it would make the Blessed Mother cry. I was raised very Catholic and believed this whole-heartedly. I wonder where she got that though, she probably just didn't want to hear my bad whistling.
I used to think that the last line of the song 'Lord of the Dance' was 'Dance then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance settee' and for years afterwards I had this image of Jesus danicng on a settee!

I wondered why when the eucharist is raised a bell would be rang, so I asked my mom right after it happened one day in mass. She leaned over and whispered in my ear that it meant I had to keep totally still and stop talking. For a couple years, everytime I heard the bell I would freeze. Then when I went to catacism and the teacher asked what the bells represented, I raised my hand and proudly said, "it means you can't move." the whole class just laughed....I didn't even hear the real answer because I was so confused that wasn't the real reason.

When I was little I believed that Jesus lived on the clouds. I was so excited for my first plane ride that I was finally going to see Him. What a disappointment when He wasn't there!

When I was in about 5th grade, I read a book in which one of the characters goes to confession. Since I'm not Catholic, I had no idea what that was, and assumed it was something I'd be expected to do when I was older. Well, at least my parents made sure I was clear on all the fundamentals!
I was told that every good person went to heaven. And one day I was watching the History Channel and I realized how many people there must be in heaven. And I told my mom I should kill myself now so I could get a half way decent spot. So I believed that there'd be no more room left for me up there.
I used to think hell was directly under the asphalt of the street. When we lost a baseball in a hole I was afraid for the grownup who stuck his hand down there to get it.

My teacher told us this story once. Apparently he was taking his four-year-old daughter to church for Easter morning mass, and she asked, "Daddy, what is Easter about?" He replied, "Well, it's the day that Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead." Her immediate response was "Nuh uh! You're lying!" "No, really," he said, "that's what Easter is about." His daughter got a really deep, thoughtful expression on her face for a minute, and then said "Well, that's really dumb. You can't come back from the dead. Even I know that."

when my sister was born 8 years after me and 7 after my brother we decided we were going to have some fun with her as she grew up. so when she was young we told her that you have to be the denomination of the hospital from which you were born. we told her that our dad was a baptist minister because he was born in a baptist hospital, and that since my mom, my brother and me were all born in the same catholic hospital we were all catholic and practiced it when she wasn't around. we told her that she was a methodist and could no longer continue going to our father's church. she threw a huge fit and started crying untill my parents came in and explained the truth.
