when I was about 4 years old it was easter and I thought easter was about the easter bunny. My mom was very religious though and tried to explain the real reason for easter. she told me that jesus had died for us. that night as we went to say grace i said thats okay we dont need to pray God is dead.

When I was about 5 years old I believed that all of the smoke from all of the fires, chemical plants, cigarettes, etc. of the world drifted up into the sky and "became Jesus". I thought that he was like a huge cloud that floated around and just got bigger and bigger.

Having been taught that every earthly deed, good or bad, was recorded in a book by God, I was concerned for the angel who sat writing them in by pencil day after day. When computers became a fact of life my vision of the Book of Life changed dramatically and I knew that Gods computer was far superior to my one.
I had a very religous grandmother who always told me Jesus was my friend. When I was a bout 3 I got upset when my mother put her hand in the water at the end of the bath as 'Jesus, the dirty little devil' was down there. I had turned him into one of my imaginary friends. My grandmother was horrified but did lay of the 'Jesus is your friend" story for a few years

When my brother was about 4 he used to pray "Gentle Jesus, meek & mild look upon this little child. If I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soldiers take"
I believed very literally my sunday school teaching that "God knows you so well, He even knows the number of hairs on your head." So, every time I brushed my hair and some hairs came out on the brush, I would silently apologize to God for giving Him something else to have to keep track of, given all the more important things He had to do...

When I was growing up, we always said the blessing before a meal. If we started eating before the blessing, I thought the food would be poisoned because God hadn't blessed it yet. I don't know how I survived all those unblessed snacks!

When I was younger, I went to Catholic church with my parents... and anyone who's been to as many Catholic masses as I have remembers how at the end of the mass when the priest says, "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord," we respond, "thanks be to God".
Well, when I was little, I used to think that we were saying "thanks speedy God." It made a lot more sense to me at the time... and everything I knew about God at the time fell right in line with him being speedy.

My daughter used to believe that God's first name was Howard because of the Lord's Prayer "...hallowed (Howard) be thy name." I almost didn't have the heart to correct her.

At my church there was a wide side walk like pathway that led to the sanctuary and it went up in the middle so i beleived that was where God was burried (like he was dead) so i tried to step lightly and i got mad when fat people walked on it.

That those names and numbers up in front of the church alter ie:(John 3:16)were of people that had recently died at that time of the day!

In Sunday School we were taught that The Lord was always with you. This made me very uncomfortable when I was using the bathroom and I took the fastest showers you ever saw.
I don't believe in God now but I still don't like to dawdle in the shower.

When I was little, my family was relatively religious, so when I was caught lying I was told that I would "go to hell" for it. Afterwards I was always sent to my room. I started to believe that "hell" was just a clever "grownup" nickname for your room or another "time out" spot..seeings how thats where I always had to go for lying. I carried this belief up until kidnergarten when my teacher told the class about a time she misbehaved as a little girl and I told her "she need to go to hell for that one"!!
I used to believe that my pastor and his family lived inside our church. I was very jealous of his kids because the had such big bedrooms and got to play with all the toys.

When I was about 7 y.o. I used to think that I was not really alive but I had died and my life was just a video in real play to show God what I had done with my life.
I used to get confused with the indians out of the cowboy & indian films and Jesus Christ in the religious films. I though Jesus and the indians were the baddies because Jesus must have been bad to have all the town against him and he was crucified. There was a cupboard that the priest was opening during service and in the moment of silence I asked my mother in a foghorn voice "Is that Jesus's Jail?"
I used to think that the prayer went:
Godice great, godice good, let us thank him....
Could never figure out what a 'godice'was, knew what a goddess was, but this was different...

My primary teacher & my mom used to tell me that the Church house was god's house. So I thought when we were not there God & Jesus were actually there living,ie, eating, walking around, cooking food, & sleeping. I used to wonder where thier beds were.

When I was a kid, my grandma had a picture of some byzantine mosaic displaying a very austere version of God. The title of the picture was "Pancreatore", that means "The Creator Of All Things" in italian. I used to believe that Pancreatore was a sort of vice-God who worked for Him when God had to punish or scold someone.
