As a child I heard a line in the song "I Saw Three Ships" as "Diversion Mary and Christ were there", rather than "The Virgin Mary and Christ were there". But that was more than a mere misheard lyric for me, since "Diversion Mary" was how I heard "The Virgin Mary" generally. I didn't grow up in a religion that put much emphasis on Christ's virgin birth. Later, when I did learn what "virgin birth" meant. my understanding of the word "virgin" remained strictly in that context until I was a High School senior and then got puzzled about talk of girls "remaining virgins". For I thought the word was exclusively associated with virgin birth, that is, giving birth by "virgin birth" was the only thing that made one a virgin. So I thought, by the orthodox Christian view, at least, Mary was the only virgin that ever lived. Quite a shock when I found out the actual meaning of "virgin".

My parents were very proud of my saying my prayers while kneeling beside my bed. In the Poem "Jentle Jesus meek and mild" I mis-spoke the line "Pity my simplicity" as "Pity my simple city". This at least made sense to me at a time in my life when the original was, to say the least, obscure! The trouble was that my reading was never corrected and any witness was encouraged to giggle at the pius child.

As a Catholic, I hated going to confession when I was little. I could never remember anything wrong I had done or any lies I had told, so I would make something up, promising myself I would confess that lie at the next confession. Always thought I would be struck down for lieing about lieing!

I once asked my young uncle how Jesus got into your heart. He said, "Through your ears". For years I covered my ears with the blanket at night as I slept.
I never really went to church when I was little. Then, in elementary school I made friends with a girl who's parents were in charge of the music at an episcopal church and I started attending with them. I was probaly about 9 years old. Anyway, they always asked me if I would take communion, and I vehemently told them no. Why? Becaue I really thought they were eating the actual body and blood of Christ--a thought I found a little disgusting because, in my mind, it had to have gotten really old and moldy because I knew Jesus lived a long time ago. This concept was further complicated by the fact that I was sure they were going to run out any day because Jesus wasn't fat.

once when i was walking home from school i was bragging to my best friend's older brother about something (i dont remember what it was), and he asked me, "do you swear to god?". i said yes and he said that if i was lying, i would automatically go to hell. i was absolutely freaked out that my eternal soul was in peril, and i prayed for my salvation the rest of the way home.

The custodian at my elementary school had a family name, as is traditional in many Latino families. He never told me his name, but I could read his nametag, and for years I was terrified of him because I thought JESUS had come back to earth as was promised at church - but as a big, gruff custodian with a tattoo.

When I was in primary school, one of the local ministers or priests would visit weekly to give religious instruction. When I was about 11, a catholic priest came and talked to us about catholicism. Afterwards, he asked if there were any questions. I stood up and asked "How old do you have to be to become a catholic?" I wasn't embarrassed at the time but I still go red when I think about it now. You see my older sister had converted to catholicism when she was about 12, (and was thinking of becoming a nun) so I thought it must be nearly time for me to do the same.
I used to think that heaven was something of a Chuckie Cheese's, and you started out with 1 million tokens, and for each sin you commited, you lost a token, and each good thing, you gained one.

When I was 10 a friend told me that if you said "devil" and "hell" more often than you said "God" and "heaven", then you would go to Hell (and vice versa). I was really worried so every time I said "hell" or "devil" in whatever context I would say heaven lots of times. When I wasn't doing anything I would often be saying "God god god god" just to even out the score.

When I was a Girl Guide, we would start every meeting by singing a song that included the line 'God is nigh'. For about two years, I was sure I was singing 'God is nice' until one of the leaders kindly corrected me. And then laughed.

When I was small I didn't know the difference between the words 'protestant' and 'prostitute', and thought they meant the same thing- needless to say I caused my mother alot of embarrassment one day when walking past a church.
