I used to believe…

When I was very little (3 or 4) the family dog was injured in a fight and had to be put down. As we were driving to the vet, I asked my parents "Where is Duffer going?" Mom said "Heaven." At that moment we were driving past a big brown brick building, so I assumed that heaven was inside that building. It didn't look like much...

When I was little I was looking at a painting of heaven and hell and the depiction of Satan really creeped me out. My grandma told me to watch out for the devil because he has blonde hair, blue eyes, and he wears blue jeans. I wouldn't go near blonde-haired men for weeks!

i used to think that being a prostitute was a religion. (sort of like protestant i guess?)

we sang a song at church 'i will make you fishers of men if you follow me' i used to get confused cos i thought it said 'i will make you vicious old men' I always wondered why being vicious was good....

When I was young, I always attend church services. When one pastor would talk about what hell looks like, I thought that he said a bad word in front of the audiences. My father corrected me at age 8 that 'hell' was not meant to be use as a swear word, hell is a place of eternal punishment for the wicked.

i remember once going through the bible as a child and i randomly came upon something that said it was better for me to rip my eye out from watching adultery then to be cast into hell. and growing up with two very older brothers i can recall seeing a view R rated movies with some sexual scenes, after that i was scared out of my pants that God would throw me into hell when i died so i would pray everynight!

I used to believe…

When I was a kid...I'm not even sure how old I was, but I was always forced to go to sunday school where they would teach us, 'God is everywhere.'
My mind couldn't decide that God was a big head watching us from the clouds, or a bunch of invisible doll-sized Jesus's stacked up against eachother, filling the whole of the universe. Don't ask me. I don't know.

No joke- I used to think the religious hierarchy went (low to high) God, then Santa Claus, then this oddly shaped piece of black plastic that I found.

I used to believe…

When I was little my grandmother made me say this prayer at night before going to sleep "..and if I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." This prayer scared me because I was afraid I would die in my sleep, and also that God couldn't stop it--so I was afraid to fall asleep and would lie awake in the darkness for hours tryng not to fall asleep.

When I was five, we often used to sing a hymn at school called "Lord of the Dance". However, whenever we came to the chorus I had this peculiar image of God and Jesus jumping up and down like deranged maniacs on a large couch. The problem, as I discovered years later, was that where the words were actually "I am the lord of the dance said he", I was hearing "I am the lord of the dance settee"!

I used to believe my mom's friend's boyfriend was Jesus. He looked like the traditional pictures of Jesus we see in The Bible. I used to scream and hide whenever I saw him; I think because I was too little to comprehend that we knew Jesus!

When I was little, my mother and aunt took me to church for the very first time. I think I was around 5 years old. ANyway, whne we got there I sat paitently with my hand folded across my lap and said repeatedly to my mother " I'm ready to see God now." I then procedded to relentlessley make comments throughout the mass such as " Hey look at the Big T", and " Who's that guy in the God suit"

when I was 5 years old, I used to believe that Kingdom of God was on the clouds, so one day, I took the plane. When I saw the plane hadn't stopped on the kingdom, I screamed and one of the passengers was so emotionnal and told me the truth about the God [the kingdom is in the space and actually no plane could go so high}and until my 12 birthday, I was looking forward to waiting for this ultra-fast sonic plane.

I grew up with a Catholic grandma, who rarely attends mass, but has pictures and statues of Jesus and saints around the house. I always used to think that Jesus was scary, because in all of his pictures around the house he wouldn't be smiling and everytime I would pass this one picture of him, a motorcycle would drive by, and I would think it was him growling at me because I thought he was scary. I would also, although I was young and had never witnessed a Passion play or anymovie pertaining to Jesus or even see a crucifix, I would dream about things such as ancient Rome, Jerusalem, the crucifixtion, the days before the Resurrection, and a woman crying. I swear to this day, the Lord came to me and said "Do not be afraid of me, I love you" It wasn't until I was over my aunts house one day, I saw a plate with Jesus talking to children smiling that I wasn't scared anymore and started to understand.

I was raised without religion. When I was little, I heard other kids talking about christian stuff, and I thought it was a fairy tale or something. I was under the impresssion that when we died, religious people, who were crazy, believed we went to the enchanted forest and lived with Casper and Wendy and the Ghostly Trio. Even when I was a child, religion seemed totally nuts to me. Santa Claus seemed much more benign and believable.

I always pictured God as a very nice benign and smiling spider in the sky.

He was drawn like a stick figure daddy longlegs and his body was a sky blue circle with a smile on it.

I thought that the 3rd commandment 'Thou shalt not take the name of Lord thy god in vain' was taking something out of the artery.

When we were at a church meeting and they would talk about 'satellite schools' I thought that 'satellite schools' were schools where you learn how to operate a satellite dish.
