I used to believe…
When I was growing up we went to church every Sunday. Often in the sermons the church was referred to as 'The House of God.' So I thought that we were God's house. I never realized that it was just a saying. I also believe that our minister (who was a woman) was God. I felt all special when she would shake our hand at the end of church. Later I learned that the church wasn't the literal house of God, and that our minister (or any religious leader) was God.

When my brother was little he used to pray this before going to bed;
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, wake up cereal.
I remember as a little girl about 5 years old asking my mom why God's name was Harold. Well it made sense to me with the Lords Prayer "Our father in Heaven, Harold be thy name" and "Hark the the Harold Angels sing"

When I was a kid I had a friend who was episcopalean (spelling?) I always thought he was saying "Popsicle Aien." For that reason, I thought he was cool, and we became friends. There was something about building tree houses with an alien that fascinated me!
I used to believe that life was everybody waiting in a big room like a restaurant, and St. Peter was the person that called the names of the people that had died. Then his assistant would put you in an elevator, and depending on if you'd been good/bad, you would to upwards for Heaven or downwards for Hell.

I believed that people ascended into heaven by using a magic umbrella that somehow propelled them up, like Mary Poppins.

I used to believe…
When reciting the Lord's prayer I thought that the words at the end were 'thine is the kingdom, the car and the lorry, forever & ever, amen'
I used to believe…
When I was little, me and my neighbor used to think that if you dug far enough in the ground, that you would see the devil. But we always stopped when we claimed to see the devils ladder.

I used to belive that if I said my prayers at night God put up a powerfull bubble that protected me from monsters.
I was 5, watching TV, and a Nun was sitting by a patient in a hospital. The patient was being given blood. Just before the advert came on, 'end of part...' whatever, it showed the Nun's face surrounded by flames, presumbaly a metaphor for war, and how Nuns are heroic & groovy medically speaking.
I believed that Nuns could walk through fire and if they caught you while you slept, they'd kill you by draining the blood out of your body.
Needless to say, I then believed Nuns were evil, Jesus and his mates were evil, and anyone that had a cross was evil.
Didn't get much sleep for a few years.
i went to a roman catholic junior school and when we sang "gladly the cross i'd bear" i thought we were singing about "gladely the cross eyed bear"
i thought that Devon was heaven, and that when jesus died he went to devon. i was also worried about the short time between Jesus' birth and death and had horrible images of a four month old baby being crucified.
I don't know if this counts, but...
I went to Disney World with my dance/performing arts group, and as we passed the Epcot Center for the first time, my friend Katie aid "look! Epcot!" well, I misheard her. I thought she said "look! it's God!" so until we went back a few days later, I kept pondering how odd it was that someone's idea of God was displayed so prominently in Disney World.
I lived in an old 3 storey house. I used to believe there was a strong chance that, when I climbed the stairs in the dark, the devil would be there waiting at the top. I would force myself to do this at night.
We also had a bathroom door with 3 froasted glass panels. Facing the mirror over the sink you could see the reflection of the door. I would force myself to look at the reflection to see if there was 2 red eyes looking in at me. There never was!
As you may have guessed I had a good catholic upbringing.

Because of the wonderful and beautiful things I was told about heaven, I wanted to die at age 6 so I could go there.
I used to believe…
From the prayer "Our Father who art in heaven Hallowed be Thy name." A friend of mine (age 6 at the time) used to think it was "Howard be Thy name" and he used to think it was really cool that God's name was Howard and that's how he prayed to Him.

I used to believe that God was called Peter. People used to say 'Thanks be to God' but what I heard was 'Thanks Peter God'
I use to get confussed because we were told jesus was born at christmas and died at easter, i assumed king herald finally found him.
How he managed to do all that stuff in the bible when he was only a baby was rather clever!
I used to belive that when they said "give your money back to God"
Ithought it ment that after the offering was taken someone would go outside and literally GIVE it back to God.
I always thought God looked kind of like this really stern man with dark hair. One day I saw a similar looking guy in my CCD (Catholic Sunday School) book next to a question saying to circle the one who was God (they had the guy up in the clouds with the flowing white beard, but I didn't think THAT was him) and I got it wrong.
Another thing: I was about two when I asked my nana where babies came from, and she told me they came from God. Until I actually asked my mother a few years later, I thought babies just kind of dropped out of the sky in little bassinettes and landed on your doorstep. I think I asked my mum why the babies didn't get hurt when they fell out of the sky and that was when she got me the "So That's How I Was Born" book.
